from what I'm seeing for the dishwasher, an E1 error means that the door is not properly closed. So, please look at the door of the machine to make sure that nothing is broken or that the dishwasher isn't too full. Thank you.

Do the top buttons still work even without the backlight? or are they not functional as well.

One of the more common issues I have seen that can cause that is the sound-deadening insulation in the door (which is rubber-like) will sometimes get the wires stuck in it and as the door is opened and closed they will stretch and break. It may be worth checking in the door to see if you have any broken or segmented wires.

one of 3 things is happening, either your "start" button is not funtioning, the door latch is not operating, so the uint doesnt recognize the door closing there fore wont operate, or the "normal" button is "stuck"( electronic switch possible shorted)

the fact that you cant get any other function out of it leads me to believe that you have a stuck button/shorted keypad. this is not available as a seperate part and requires replacing the "console with active overlay"
