The age of this unit and the way it is working lead me to believe the issue is with a component called a capacitor. These components age and fail causing the condition that you are describing. The capacitors are usually in the power supply board and when they fail there is too much ripple current allowed into the main board and the power switch wont latch to turn on the unit. There could also be a bad super capacitor in the main board that functions like a battery and it may have died. Unless you have soldering skills and the right test gear, there is not a lot that you can do yourself.
