Coffee pot has a salty, chemical smell.

Years ago, a family member passed away. They had a brand new Kitchenaid coffee pot so I brought it home with me. When I brewed a pot, it had an off smell and taste. I flushed it several times and the water had a salty, chemical kind of smell. My son even said it smelled like a hot tub. I ran vinegar through it several times and flushed with several pots of water after each time but it never got better. I finally gave up and thought maybe it just needed some time to air out. I put it away for several years. I just got it out again and it still has that smell. I've tried running isopropyl alcohol through it and flushing with several pots of water and tried vinegar again. Nothing is getting rid of this smell. Any clue what causes it?

Isopropol Alcohol is the wrong product for that issue. It is a pure alcohol solvent.

I have two ideas, and the smell is probably from having water sitting in it an eventually drying out and fusing to limescale.

I descale my machine every 6 months. I use CLR.

CLR

The other product you might try is 5% Hydrogen Peroxide which is a non toxic, organic bleach.

..

Testimonial: "Thank you for the advice. I had previously read concerns about using CLR on coffee pots; people saying it ruined their pots, so I am leary of trying that method. I did however, try your suggestion of using hydrogen peroxide. I actually ran 6 bottles of peroxide through this coffee pot and the smell is still there. The pot is a kitchenaid with charcoal filter. I read on the kitchenaid site that they recommend Affresh cleaning tablets. I am wondering if 6 bottles of peroxide didn't remove this smell, would I be wasting my time and money by ordering the Affresh tablets? Thanks!"

    Hello Carol
I have been using CLR on my Black and Decker and my 2 Sunbeam pour and serve coffee pots for 17 years. Not one of them has failed because of descaling every 6 months. On my Sunbeam I add the CLR and water as per the coffee machine mix ration on the side of the CLR bottle. I think it is something like 1 part CLR to 8 parts water.. I swing the water spray arm back over the water reservoir and let the solution cycle for about 10 minutes. Then I move the arm over the filter basket so it drains into the coffee jug. Then I run a full 12 cups jug of water through, and tip it down the sink. I do this again twice.

When was the last time you changed the charcoal filter? That may be causing the issue? Remove the filter to descale.

    One of these machineshttps://www.google.com/search?q=kitchena...

Affresh is a good product and usually used in dishwashers and washing machines.

Thanks so much for hanging in there with me! The negative comments regarding CLR were that they then could not get the smell and taste of the CLR out of their coffee makers after using it. Maybe they forgot to remove their charcoal filters, lol. (Yes, I did remove the charcoal filter.) I decided to try using stronger peroxide and that is once again flushing a white substance. (We have 35% which I diluted to 3% per a chart. The 3% initially flushed white particles but then started running clear. I've made a stronger batch.) I'll keep trying the peroxide for now. I guess the pot just has a lot of build up. I could have sworn my Father-In-Law said the maker was new. Thanks again!!!

No problem. I just wish you would try the CLR. There is no taste after rinsing. It you have 'white substance' it is most likely limescale and Peroxide won't shift it :>D

I'm contemplating, lol. I'm deciding between trying that and spending the extra money on the Affresh tablets.

Would you believe I am still trying to clean this coffee pot? I did follow your advice and tried the CLR. I ran several pots of water through it that day and have been running a pot of water through it every morning (sometimes 2-3 times a day) since then and it still smells like a hot tub. If I let the water cool before dumping it, there are tiny white crystals on the surface. My husband is wondering if the pot itself is degrading or something. Any ideas?

That is strange Carol. If they are floating, it means they are plastic particles, because limescale would sink. When plastic deteriorates it can flake off the surface. I can picture in my mind that I have seen this, but I can't place where. It was a dry, grey plastic tube and you could scratch the surface off with your fingernail. I reckon it is beyond repair and time to buy a new one.

You are very welcome. Take it to Goodwill, give someone else the fun! I can recommend Sunbeam Pour and Serve.

My kitchenaid coffee maker gives us an "error 2" and will not brew. help!

This problem occurs between 6 months and 1 year of these coffee pots. I have contacted customer service each time this occurs and have received a new coffee pot. Unfortunately, I am calling them again and again because the new coffee pots do not even last their warranty time and the ERR2 light again comes on and ruins my morning. I would not recommend this coffee pot. It is expensive and life time is not long at all. Customer service has been great but how many times do you have to return a coffee pot for Kitchenaid to get the hint that it needs to be fixed. Most consumers will get angry, throw it away and never buy the same one again. So, wake up Kitchenaid and smell the COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fix this coffeepot. I am not the only one who has had this problem. Customer service @ 1-800-541-6390 Hope this helps. When they send you a new one they send you free shipping back for the old one and you use the box the new one came in.

Error 2-Unit will not heat or brew. Stopped in middle of brewing cycle and flashed error 3 code. After unplugging unie and plugging back in an error 2 remains.

Error message 2 is a result of the water heating element burning out. The element is replaceable, if you can find a vendor who sells the element assembly. Price of a new element may be more that a new pot though, if you're lucky enough to find a parts vendor that sells one.

My Survival Guide To The Dreaded Err2 Disaster

An ERR 2 may be cleared by a simple reset of the coffee maker. This means unplugging the unit and plugging it back in. When powered back on, select a brew function to see if the error reappears.

If it does, ERR 2 indicates an internal error with the computer of the warming plate. This may be covered under Kitchenaid's 1 Year Hassle Free Warranty. I would advise you to call Kitchenaid Customer Service to see what options are available to you. Repair is not recommended, as it is not cost effective for the company or the consumer.

Their toll-free telephone number is 1-800-541-6390.
Thank you, have a nice day.

Bloomfield 3-pot coffee maker won't brew

These macines have an internal water heater that should be clened periodicly (monthly per manufacturers instructions but I do it quarterly/semianually/when it gets noisy :) ). The machine will have to be disasembled to do this since the tank will have to be flushed when you do this to get the chemicals out of it (vs running a pot of vinegar through your Mr. Coffee machine at home), Depending on how much scale has built up in the tank this could take several cleaninings. Scale deposits can over time impair/damage the heater or thermostat but replacement parts are cheaper than a new machine and the machine will outlast and outperform a standard coffee maker. BTW, my 8572 3 burner was built in 1972, I bought it at a flee market for $25 10 years ago put $100 in parts to get the push to brew and hot water on tap working again and it made two great pots of coffee this morning.

Coffee pot leaking

Your brewer has a 3 year warranty. If you will call customer service with the model and code date and it is less than 3 years old, we will replace it with a new machine at no cost. If it is over 3 years old, we will replace it at a reduced price.
