The picture is for ford starter relay. The two large wires, from battery to starter relay, from starter relay to starter motor. The third wire is ignition feed.
Trip wire ????? The starter circuit is computer controlled . The ignition switch to start send's B+ voltage to the transmission range switch , if in park or neutral the B+ voltage goes to the starter relay coil side an on to the PCM - engine computer .If not problems with the anti-theft system the PCM supply's a ground which will energize the relay an close the contacts inside sending B+ voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid engaging an spinning the engine over . Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? How to use one to locate testing point's in a electrical circuit ? Do you know what a relay is an how it works ? Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size . Or go to ebay and type in 1989 ford f-150 repair manual. Or go to Autozone and sometimes they have it.
when looking at it from the front the most left is from the battery, now going right from there the little pin is from ignition, basically to flip this giant switch on. next little pin goes to your fuel shut off relay, it will turn on that relay to send power to your pump while cranking, next is the large out. far right. that goes to your starter.
The field wire to the starter has a small eyelet connector that connects to the small terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "S").
All other wires have a large eyelet connector and they are all connected together with the battery cable to the large terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "BAT").
Sometimes the field wire to the starter is a push on type connector, and there would only be one obvious terminal on the starter solenoid that it could be connected to.
This used to be a common problem. Check to see that you didn't install the power feed wire for the truck on the wrong side of the starter relay. You should only have one wire on one large post. The one wire should be the one going to the starter. If any other wires are there they need to be moved to the other large post on the relay with the battery cable attached.
Go to autozone.com and register they have good wiring diagrams for your truck. What I saw was all the relays going to ground so you should have 12V coming off the ignition switch.
