In my case the answer is: it's time to buy a new one. I called Kintrex and they haven't made infrared thermometers for 5 years and could not answer any questions about them. I found a similar item made by Thermoworks and despite their product's similar specs and similar error codes the technical people there did not know what Er 5 means, and suggested removing the batteries and letting the machine sit for 10 minutes or more to "reset". I've tried that to no avail.
First, be sure to clean the battery connection points with an electrical contact cleaner and be sure that the batteries are new, not just different. If that does not work, try placing the instrument in a freezer for at least 30 minutes. This worked with my 5 point Stanley Fat Max. The freezer will cause some condensation to form on the inside of the instrument, but why it makes the diode work is a mystery, at least to me.
Ambient temperature is not within the allowed operating range (10 - 40 °C or 50 - 104 °F). Allow the thermometer to remain for 30 minutes in a room where the temperature is between 10 and 40 °C or 50 and 104 °F.

Best way is with a non-contact laser thermometer, it cost about $30.00 at Harbor Freight Tool if there's one in your area, point the laser to the lower hose and then to the upper hoes, should have a reading of + or - 10 deg. between the two.You could also used a reguler thermometer, with radiator cap off and engine running, let it sit in there, temp. should go up and down as thermostat opens and closes if water is flowing through.
What are you going by to say it's overheating , temp gauge ? Have you test to see what the actual temp. is > Hook - up a scan tool ,what's the PCM - engine computer seeing for engine temp. ? 223 degress the PCM should turn on the cooling fan . You could buy a
Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting at harbor freight ! Radiator very hot ????? What is the right temp .
Non Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting
Could be a bad temp gauge . Is the coolant surging inside the cooling system ? Does it have a radiator cap ? Have you replaced it ?
