If you registered a phone number with your gmail account, you may recover your gmail account by using that option. Gmail will text a number to the phone registered with the account and you have to type that number (begins with G-, but you only type in the number after the dash). If you don't have access to a phone with that number you are surely out of luck unless you also provided an alternative email address that you CAN log into. If you have neither and can't convince Google that it is your email address in any other way (security questions) then you will need to say goodbye to that gmail account and get another.
