Hi Joe
They are both telling you the truth, water or even condensation makes the oil milky, Chef Andrew says, "just like making mayonnaise". :>D Run it to running temperature, drain the oil and replace with new. Run the engine once a month in the off season.

Water has gotten in the oil some how is cap on tight or maybe water got in there when you used a water hose to clean it or left it out in the rain does your cap have 3 or 4 tiny vent holes water will go through these tiny holes at any rate I would drain the oil and put in clean oil

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but what happened to me a couple times was, I got gas at the gas station in my gas can once forgot and left it outside and I guess it rained and I didn't know water got in the gas and I tried using it in my mower and trimmer had a real hard time getting them to run I checked the gas in can and that is when I knew water got in there. Another time I got bad gas that had water in it from the gas station. So u never know how sometimes it just happens.

Do u take a water hose sometime to clean the mower, or could moisture had gotten into the oil bottle that you used to pour oil in the mower. I don't know how I did it but I got water in my oil after I hosed it down I guess I sprayed water in the oil somehow it wasn't much but then again any moisture in the oil is bad had to dump it out and put new oil in it

Specifications, for Craftsman Riding Mower, Model 247.289010. Quanity for oil.

Without an oil filter you will need approx. 48 oz. With an oil filter about 18 oz more. Hope this helps. You should have dipstick to register when it is full.

My craftsman lawn tractor seemed to overheat and struggle with hesitation. I replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the filter and added oil, however, it still seeems a little sluggish with hesitation. Do you...

Check the oil, if it is a milky color then it has water in it and will cause it to over heat. Also smell it for gas that will also cause it to over heat. Has any other work been done recently?

My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.
  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it thanks for using Fixya!

Gas in the oil in my craftsman 17.5 riding mower

You have a bad antibackfire valve. It is located on carburator below the fuel bowl. You can replace it, or as I advise others, install an inline shutoff valve. Turn the fuel valve on to start it, then turn it off when you shut the engine down.
