Anytime I switch on my NEC laptop, it takes time to load and when it does. It turns gray with bios setup options

I tried using certain keys on the keyboards like: esc to exit bios setup when I press the button, the laptop goes blank for some seconds then it goes back to the same problem...Any idea on what to do?

NEC laptop stuck in Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility

While in the BIOS setup utility, go through the tabs/menus looking for BOOT sequence. Configure the laptop to boot from CD-Drive before any other drive. Have the installation CD in drive.Save the changes made to the BIOS configuration, and exit the BIOS. Reboot.
If the installation medium itself does not have a problem, you should be able to boot from it and have the opportunity to install the operating system.

Reset bios

  • Restart the system. Click on "Start," "Turn off Computer" and "Restart."
  • At the Dell loading screen Tap "F2" to enter the BIOS. "Entering Setup" will appear. Certain models may use a different key. The key will be displayed during the boot process. For most Dell models, the key is "F2."
  • Once loaded, depending on BIOS version and type, you can reset the defaults by using "F9" key to Load Defaults, the "Load defaults" button on screen, or the "Alt" + "F" key combination to load factory defaults.
  • Press "Esc" on your keyboard and select save and exit.
  • Choose the "Enter" key to save all changes and exit the BIOS screen. Allow your system to restart for the BIOS settings to reset.

Bios utility

BIOS Setup utility?

Dell laptop?

Lot of information here.......let me see if I can sift through it.........

Post the model number in a Comment.
The model number can be found on the Bottom of the laptop.

As soon as you turn your laptop on, watch for the Dell logo screen.
WATCH the bottom of the screen.
What key does it state to press, to - enter BIOS Setup?

Write it down.
If Windows loads let it load, and run a few minutes. Then turn the laptop off normally.

THIS time AS SOON AS you press the Power On button, start tapping on that BIOS Setup key.
Tap in 2 second intervals.

You may hear beeps. Those are Stuck Key Error Code beeps, and it is you that is doing it. Ignore them.

This will get you into the BIOS Setup utility.

If Windows doesn't load, press the CTRL key, and ALT key, and DELete key, AT THE SAME TIME.
This will restart your laptop, and start tapping on that enter BIOS Setup key.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Want to re-format MSI Notebook S420. Screen continuously shows windows 'loading' but never boots. I have the recovery CD but because the computer never actually starts, I'm not sure what to do with it!MSI

Hello megan_van

While your laptop is on, eject the optical drive and insert the recovery CD. Turn off your laptop via the power button, and turn it back on. The recovery CD should boot. Follow the on-screen instructions to do a clean install.

If the recovery CD doesn't boot, try holding down the C key after turning on your laptop. If it still doesn't boot, you will have to change the boot order in BIOS. Don't worry, this is easier than it sounds! Follow these instructions:

1. Turn on your laptop, and look for a message that says something like PRESS (USUALLY F2, F8, DEL, ETC.) TO ENTER SETUP / BIOS. Hit that key before the Windows logo appears.

2. After hitting the relevant key, you'll be taken to the BIOS setup utility. All BIOS utilities have different appearances, but it is basically a set of menus containing different settings for your laptops hardware. Somewhere on the screen (usually the bottom), is a set of instructions for navigation your way around the BIOS. Follow these instructions to navigate your way to the option for changing the boot order.

N.B. Since every BIOS setup utility is different, the specifics on where the boot order options are located varies from computer to computer. The menu option or configuration item might be called boot options, boot, boot order, etc. The boot order option may even be located in a general menu like advanced options, advanced BIOS features, other options, etc.

3. Once you've located it, use the navigational controls to place the optical drive above the hard drive (usually the +/- keys). To be certain that the recovery CD boots, it's probably best to move the optical drive to the top of this list.

4. Within the navigational controls, there is usually an option to SAVE & EXIT. Press this key. If there isn't, look for a menu option with the heading EXIT. A SETUP CONFIRMATION box will now usually appear asking you to confrm the changes you've made to the BIOS before exiting.

N.B. The SETUP CONFIRMATION box can sometimes be worded cryptically. Read the message carefully to be sure that you're saving your changes instead of exiting WITHOUT saving your changes!

Your computer should now restart automatically, and the recovery CD should now boot.

Hope this helps. If you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.
