You can connect the DVD player ot your Sony TV in two ways. One way is via AV cable, and the other is S-Video cable. If you use AV cabel, connect the cable's one side ends to output sockets of the DVD player, marked as Audio-L, Audio-R and Video. Connect the other side of the cable's respective ends ot TV's respective sockets, marked as Audio_L, Audio-R and Video. This socket can be located at the back of your TV. If you expects a beetter picture quality, you can connect the TV-DVD by S-Video cable. If you connect it via Audio Video cabe, switch the TV to get AV-1, AV-2 etc, by input selector option. If you connect S-Video cable, Select TV' to recive S-video input via its input selector option. You can do these selections by the help of TVs remote control. OK.

first of all i did fing the sony manual on sony's website http://www.docs.sony.com/release/KV36FS13.PDF

page 32 shows the audio out jacks , run the red and white wires to the inputs on the aiwa (i did not find a manual for the aiwa) if there are no input jacks on the aiwa then you can not connect it.

The inputs you refer to should be colored as follows.
Red
Blue
Green
Red
White
(not necessarily in this order)
These are what are called Component Video inputs and is one of the way that HD capable equipment connect to your television. It will not get true HD picture but this input will provide you with a crisper clearer picture.

Please make sure that one input is connected to the UHF/VHF port of the TV and other is connected to composite or component ports. If you have connected likewise, please perform the steps below:

1. Ensure the video source is turned on.
2. Ensure the video source is connected to an available VIDEO input jack on the back of the television. IMPORTANT: The VIDEO 5 input cannot be used to view a program in the PIP window.
   
3. On the television remote control, press the TV FUNCTION button.
4. On the television remote control, in the PIP section, press the TV/VIDEO button to select the appropriate video input for the PIP window.
5. If the issue is not resolved, connect the Audio/Video (A/V) cable from the video source to a different VIDEO input jack on the television.
6. On the television remote control, in the PIP section, press the TV/VIDEO button to select the appropriate video input for the PIP window.
7. If the issue is not resolved, replace the A/V cable.

No, It is not HD capable. But you do have a component input, separate; red, green, and blue jacks in the back but it will not accept HD (High Definition) input, you can only to 480I

It is not a matter if your TV is compatible with a digital signal, it is the signal being offered to the TV.
Meaning, if you are using Cable TV, you are fine and need no further action because the digital signals are already converted by the Cable Box into either an analog TV (RF) signal, or a PBR (RGB or Comp.Video) signal which the TV understands via a separate input (external video input).
