KCMS145JSS kitchenaid microwave start button doesn't work unless I hold it down the entire time it's on.

replace touch pad the control board is self diagnosing and is not receiving the signal or continually receiving a stuck key signal

Check the door safety interlock safety switches for proper operation. You will find them inside the cabinet.

If they have failed, the oven thinks the door is open and therefore will not turn on the heat. This is the most common reason for failure.

This sounds like a control board issue.

The magnetron (the part that heats the food) may be ready to burn out. If you smell the burning, you should then unplug the microwave, open it up and see if you can determine for sure that it is coming from that part. Unfortunately even if I am right, it is almost more cost effective to just replace the microwave rather than replace that part. You can run this microwave till it dies if you want, but I would be ready with a new one.

bad control panel.. all power is routed through the control panel.. if your having a problem like that i would replace the control..
