The cancel light is on because the cycle maybe paused or canceled. The lit red button should say Cancel/Drain. If you already tried to press start and if it won't finish the cycle then try pressing the Cancel/Drain to drain and start over.
I too had problems with the Kenmore Elite (aka Bosch). The issue was solved by replacing the Lock Sensor on the door. After replacing the sensor the dishwasher has been working. Hope this helps.
First make sure that nothing is blocking the drain pump
assembly located inside the lower front panel of the dishwasher. If the issue
returns after its cleaned then try to reset the dishwasher control by pressing
the HEATED DRY button and hold it for 15 seconds, if its still not resolved
then it means that the control board has gone bad and should be replaced. Hope
this helps...please post back for further assistance.
I had this same problem so I took the front panel off to access the thermal fuse. What I found instead was that food had become lodged in the door latch which was keeping the door safety switch from operating properly. I took a thin screwdriver and removed the food from the cavity. Since you did not have the problem in your first five years the cavity just might be the problem since that is about the amount of time it took me to get too much food stuck in mine as well. This solution took five seconds and requires no disassembly.
