It sounds to me that it is possibly in another mode ie. PC, HDMI, etc. and when reset to default goes to tv, but once turned off, goes back to the other mode. I would suggest going to menu and instead of going to default, go to TV and set it for that mode. You may have to do this very quickly upon startup before it goes to another mode.
Sometimes, someone accidentally turns off the sound - check your settings and if you have external speakers, unplug them, switch off your TV and unplug everything, wait for 10 seconds and then plug it back in and restart it to check if this makes a difference; try some external speakers as well if they are available to you. Still nothing, call the manufacturer's helpline.

did you look on gateways website for a bios update. the firmware on your motherboard maybe corrupt. go here and check since I dont have your serial number... gateway has a java based scanner that might be able to repair it for you
