most modern gas heaters use a code system to tell the operator what the problem is. look for a pattern in the flashing, and then compare that pattern to the literature on the inside of the heaters panel. When you have a diagnosis code, you can follow the appropriate course of action.

I have the same issue, Flashing PF after off /on. The burner fires up and seems to heat OK but still flashing

The thermostat on the unit is located in the lower right hand side of the unit behind the trim panel closest to the wall. Look for a yellow wire with a black rubber bulb on the end. It will have a few feet of extra wire tied up in the heater itself and allows you to raise it to get a better more accurate reading. To change it, you have to unplug it from the PC board and plug in the new one. You can not use a conventional thermostat on a Rinnai heater.

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, in their 2008 recall notice. The hazard is "A gasket in the unit can fail, posing a risk of poisonous carbon monoxide gas leaking into the home."

Check your filter ,and clean it. A system must be able to breath.

go to rinnai's website and look up the manual for the diagnostic codes. rinnai.us, look under literature/manuals. type in "556". It will tell you how to retreive the error codes.

its located directly on the back of the heater and the wall spacer, from the control panel, its about 4 inches back.
Pull it up, clean reinstall

As a licenced plumber the only thing I will suggest is to call someone and have them service the heater.

Gas is deadly, and it sounds like there is something blocking the injector port, causing the gas/air mixture to not mix properly, which will make the flame change colour and characteristics.

The burner may need to come out, the inlet gas pressure will need to be checked and other things.

The rinai heaters are also expensive, as you would know, and trying to fix it yourself is dangerous. Also, once serviced by a plumber you will have the peace of mind to know it has been serviced properly and will run well for many more years.

You will need to find a licenced gas fitter.
