It is pretty easy - make sure gas valve is open, change control know to pilot. Press the ignitor a few times and once pilot lights up switch control to warm or hot position.
The sediment that can build up in the bottom of a water heater can actually harden the popping sound your hearing is from the water that is trapped under the build up. when your heater fires the water under that build up has no where to go so it turns to steam so the popping sound is that steam bursting through the build up. If flushing it didn't help the only way to stop it would be to get a new heater
Doesn't sound like its the dip tube, its a element problem, I would contact bw directly to see if heater is stil in warranty and they will send you new parts free.
Water heater is not identified and gas valve is not known. Review options below:
1) Add a comment and describe what gas control valve is on the water heater, and model number from label on side of unit. Include what you have tried so far.
2) Try unplugging water heater and see if water heater resets. Disconnect blower from gas valve, then plug blower in to see it it operates. This will eliminate or include blower as suspect.
No the top thermostat is the first place I would start to replace. They run about 14.00 more than likely it isn't controling right. Turn power supply to water heater off and replace thermostat.
If you was getting scalding hot and then turning cold without tripping the thermostat it would be the top element working and the bottom one bad.
Bottom element good it will give you luke warm water for a while then gradually turn cold because it's heating the bottom of the tank.
The slightly warm water makes me think of a thermostat problem. The fact that the heater is 10 years old I wonder how hard your water is. Calcium build up kills water heaters. But the yellow flame you mention could be the results of dirty orfices. May want to have a Pro look at that.
replace upper thermostat, and hi temp limit, usually made in one piece, also make sure the new stat is pushed up tight to the tank when you install it.
