GE ROOM AHC24DZH1 Room Air Conditioner Issue: AC will not stay on. Mold was growing in the styrofoam cooling port so we took the front panel off to clean. We removed the electronics panel to avoid any overspray and cleaned the reverse side of the panel vents where mold had grown as well. Everything was then reassembled. When we plugged the unit back in, we get a full panel illumination of ALL the settings with an '88' code on the large display next to the power button. This blinks on and off in 5 second intervals with an accompanying beep, never stopping until we unplug the unit. The A/C unit can be tripped on and cools when the panel is fully illuminated, but cuts off when the panel cycles off. Al McDonald
Take it apart again and reassemble. Ensure all connections are good and wires not pinched.
Testimonial: "Tom, its appreciated. I did that twice. No pinched cables. Question: is the plug on the end of the black covered wire going from the control unit to the back of the front cover panel a standard USB plug? I originally attempted to unplug this to completely remove all the electronics from the front panel, but felt some resistance and let it go. If a standard USB plug, I can be more forceful and do as you said, remove then reassemble hoping to clear the code."

I can’t say for certain but it is unlikely. I’m sure it’s a type of molex connector with a release tab on one side or the other probably very difficult to see. Possibly although plugs are fully inserted some wires may have loosened inside the plug. Go through and be sure wires are pushed all the way into the connectors.
