I installed refill cartridges and in getting e5 error is there and way i can get around this.
Had the same problem - would not recognise ink - would not scan - would not print --- phoned up canon help desk - no solutions for ink problem or scanner problem - cannon say printer will require servicing - so the nice man is emailing me return centres -(no idea of cost yet???) will be looking for a replacement 3 in 1 for future use -
Maybe your refill cartridge is defective. don't use refill, coz it will cost you if your printer damage.

You should check the ink level.
Open the [Printer Properties] dialog box. Click the [Maintenance] tab and click [View Printer Status].
If the "?" mark appears then you have to disable the low ink warning. If something else appears please let me know.
The reset procedure is this:
1) With the printer powered off but connected to a power source, press the Power button while pressing and holding
the Stop/ Reset button.
2) When the Power is lit, press the Stop/Reset button two times while pressing and holding the Power button.
3) When releasing the Power button and the Stop / Reset button (regardless of order), the printer will move into a
service mode. (Waiting for menu selection)
4) When the on/off lights in green, press the Stop/Reset button the specified number of time(s) according to the
function listed in the table below.(Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in
orange and green, starting with orange.)
