First check the switch-- does it have power, then check the solenoid to see if it works-- there are two. One is for down, One is for up. If you get power from the solenoid-- outgoing-- check connections going to pump motor.

The over heat could be caused by air being sucked in at the hose conection to the outdrive. This is very common on the 270 drive as it does not have an impeller in it and the water pump located at the motor has to **** the water in. If it sucks air it will air lock and not cool. You can prove this by replacing your internal hose with clear to see if you see air bubbles. You may only see the air when on plane or with the outdrive in a bucket of water not covering the hose bracket (which is out of the water on plane). Check both ends of the external cooling hose and the gasket of the housing at the outdrive attachment.
