SOURCE: Print Cartridge Problem- HP PSC 1513
My print cartridge problem was finaly solved by replacing the power supply cord!!!
It was found that the supply connector at the back of the printer did not have good enough
contact which caused the printer to fail during powerup (during powerup it drows more power when
it turns on the morots...).

I replaced my ink cartridge on my HP 5280 Photosmart. Now it says, "refer to printer documentation". What do I do?

Try to unplug the printer from the outlet and the computer, wait for 5-10 min. Then plug only the ac cord back to the wall, turn printer on and see what happens. If it seems ok, then plug back into your computer. Also there is usually a process in the printer program that lets tell the printer it has new carts installed.

I was getting this same VERY unhelpful error and the only thing that solved it for me was to buy another genuine HP black cartridge (350XL). As soon as I put it in, it cleared the error and sprang to life. As a matter of interest, before this happened, the HP Toolbox utility was also saying that the old cartridge was nearly empty. So why on earth doesn't the printer tell you the same thing??? Come on HP - get your firmware sorted. Disappointed.
