Set the load to large, set the water temp as hot as it allows, pour in two cups of bleach and run it with no clothes.

Hi

The smell usually comes when the washer is unable to drain water completely, you can run your washer at its hottest temperature setting with 1 cup of vinegar inside the unit. After this take off the bottom front panel and clean it completely, also clean the drain hose and drain pump filter, the smell should disappear after doing all this. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

The washer has a musty/sour smell to it...any way to clean it?

There are several things you can do. First you might try filling with hot water and dissolving 1 cup of baking soda. Let it sit for about an hour. Then complete the cycle and when done, leave the top open so tub will dry completely.
Second, you might try the same thing but use 1 cup of chlorine bleach. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and then complete the cycle. Again, leave the top open so the tub will air dry.
Finally, you can fill with hot water and use 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for an hour and then follow the same procedures above.
Once you've run the cycle, you can wipe down the interior edges and under surfaces with a rag that has been moistened with the solution of vinegar or chlorine.
The baking soda neutralizes odors. The chlorine bleach will kill mold and mildew spores. The vinegar is acidic and it too will prevent the mold and mildew from growing.
Once you've freshened the washer, remember to leave the top up after you've completed all the laundry so that there is air and light entering the tub. Mold and mildew do not live well in bright, airy environments. I hope this helps. If so, please come back and comment on my suggestions!

Hi We Have a ge front load washer and dryer and it seems that our clothes smell musty at times. I've tried leaving the door open on the washer when not in use. Could there be another prooblem??

Try using vinegar, baking soda, or bleach in an empty load to counteract any residues left in onboard water. Also check for debris stuck in door baffle(rubber sleeve between door and tub).

Musty smell

This problem is caused because the water does not get totally pumped out of the outer tub and sits in the bottom of the tub and in the front seals. Eventually a mildew type scum develops and causes the washer to stink and also impart the odor to clothes. Even though front loaders do use less water and energy, all of them have essentially the same design and therefore all will eventually develop this problem.
Run a load with just bleach (about 1 cup) and white vinegar (about 1 1/2 cups) poured directly into the washer with hot water and it seemed to help, but this does need to be repeated about once a month or so...

but with your wife's Asthma tho you could try
Typically the cause is the machine itself, but occasionally the water being used in the washer can be the source of the problem. If the smell resembles rotten eggs, you may need a water filtration system installed. After you eliminate any other possibilities, you can begin the treatment process. Create a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to 2 cups of white distilled vinegar. 3Begin a wash cycle using the machine’s hottest setting. As the water rises, add the baking soda and vinegar mixture. Let the washing machine complete a full cycle. If you notice any residue that has been loosened, use a cloth to wipe the surface clean. Run a cold water cycle to complete the process. You should immediately notice that the smell has been neutralized.

Musty smell, but can't tell from where

I have the same problem with a 3 month old ge front loading washer.after 1 month it started off smelling musty..I thought it was my imagination, now at 3 months old our clothes smell so bad I think we might just have to buy new clothes! everytime I wash a load the clothes smell worse and now you can even smell it just walking into our closet 2 floors up. A new washing washing machine should NOT be doing this! so far leaving the door open in between washes has helped a little but I plan on tipping it back and finding the hidden filter today. Isn't it lovely that they don't mention a filter that needs monthly cleaning or it's location in the manuals?!

Admiral Washer smells like mildew

yes it could . If you are trying to pump the water 7 feet or more above the floor then it will at the end of the cycle get air into the drain hose causing cavatation, the result when the machines stops is the water running back down the drain hose back into the tub and that is what causes the musty smell.
Lower the drain if possible

Moldy smell in front load kenmore washer

I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.
