try resetting the camera back to factory defaults by putting camera in P mode, menu, custom reset

I believe you're hearing the VR in the lens adjusting. Try turning the VR off and see if you hear the sound. If not, then you have a normal operating lens.

If the lens is stuck out then you will find it is usually one of a few reasons.
1. Check the batteries (obvious I know).
2. The camera has been dropped or knocked.
3. The camera has grit or dirt in the lens mechanism.
Providing the batteries are ok then 2 and 3 usually mean a professional repair. The lenses tend not to be something that the average home user can remove and take apart. The cost of repair also might be more than the camera value so you will need to find a good repair shop near you and get a quote.

It is possible that the amplifier had encountered a fault with a higher current drain which had triggered it to a protection fault condition. The fault can be your output drivers- the MOSFETS/IC's fitted for both the channels, Use a meter after disconnecting to check for short in the drivers. Disconnect the positive and negative voltages to the output and see if the protect changes. Even a fault in the preamp stages that drives in high current into the output can shut the Amplifier. Sometimes this can be a noise like a HUM or HISS before the protect works. Faulty capacitors in these circuits also can cause similar issues and needs close observation.
You need to confirm and replace the specific stages or outputs. If not there can be issues in the mother board, maybe the protect circuit by itself is shutting off due to a faulty bias , maybe a leak in any voltage/current sensing circuit. Also disconnect the speakers and test, if the protect is off then check for short on the speakers.

The non-functioning of the camera can be a fault in the shutter, zoom or auto focus sections and may be due to the failure of the Main control system or the drive. A simple was is to reset and we can try by removing the battery and card for some time. Now replace only the battery and while switching power ON, tap the lens hood on the palm of your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck. You can spray a degreasing spray on the lens hood sides and also assist the lens as it tries to come out, attempt to pull it out slowly while powering ON the camera. Also in some cases you can slid a thin film/paper on the lens hood sides to wipe out any dirt. Tips to open and check for common faults: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Mj3Qp3xYU&feature=related
Use some air to blow between the lenses to dislodge any sand particles struck inside. Unless you are familiar with handling of small devices must you try and open. If so check the voltage on the motor drive check the auto focus and Zoom drives, it must be free with manual movement. If jammed the motor can be removed and released. If none of these works then you can think of taking consensus with the service centre.
Get estimate before you decide. It will be good to have it checked at the authorised service as you do not have to run around for spares.
