Several things could cause crank but no start. In my experience the most likely causes would be:
1) Clogged fuel filter
2) Bad fuel pump relay
3) Bad fuel pump.
4) Bad control module
Replace fuel filter first since it needs to be replaced every so often anyways. If still won't start
You can swap fuel pump relay with another same relay in fuse box. Easy way to rule out the relay.
Test fuel pressure. If low or no pressure
Test control module. If good,
Replace fuel pump.
I had same issue with my 2005 Ranger 4.0 several months ago and replacing fuel pump fixed it. Runs great now.
If the trucks turns over and does not seem like the battery is dead I would assume it is spark or fuel. Check spark plugs to make sure they spark. Pull one plug at a time hold it against side of engine and have someone turn the truck over for you. You should see bright spark from all spark plugs. If you do see spark then check your Fuel Pump to make sure it is getting power and is opperating correctly also check your fuel filter to make sure it is not plugged. Good luck, Hope this helps.
spark plugs are deep in the head yet you should get all the the old fuel out first, stale fuel wont ignite and will also clogg fuel filter. you need a mix of atleast 70% new fuel even then its not good for the injecters. If its a manual gearbox a tow start is a quick fix although no go for auto's. cant be much wrong if car was fine when parked, plugs-fuel-filter and possibly fuel pump for sure. If that doesnt fix take plug out put in lead and crank engine to be sure you have spark even just put any plug you know works in lead leaving your plugs in engine just to check for spark y turning over engine looking for spark on plug good spark will be blue but any spark is good.
Well if it is cranking you need to see if you are getting spark and fuel.....Try turning the ignition on without cranking the motor....You should hear your fuel pump making a whirring sound for about 3 sec.and then shut off...If no sound from pump (which is located in the fuel tank) check the fuel pump fuse If fuse is good check fuel pump relay...If all checks out ok with fuel pump take into consideration when the fuel filter was changed last....I dont recommend adding fuel injection cleaner to your tank without first changing fuel filter...additive is designed to break up debris thus breaking up all trapped particles in filter sending debris through your injectors.... To check for spark pull the #1 spark plug wire and place it on an angle on tip of plug (allowing you to see if spark is present) have an assistant crank engine while you look for spark..... Do not hold spark plug wire in your hand while engine is cranked.... I hope this has helped you
did you check to see if fuel pump is pumping. fuel filter isnt clogged is it? but you're sure there is no spark. because if there is spark it could be air flow problems.
and you changed the ignition switch so that's not it, how about the starter. is there any noise coming from the starter when you turn key? if it isn't lined up right.
there has to be spark if you did what you said take off a wire at night and try it . electricity to start goes, ign switch battery starter(is there a relay on s10s cant remember), the alternator is here also.to coil/distributor to wires to plugs to gasoline
also it could be the wires coming from the battery , check them for corrosion. if they are really corroded could be problem. and make sure your ground is good contact. ive seen corrosion inside wires causing no spark.
just a few ideas to check.
I can only say that for the old cars even sitting for a year is not healthy, because most parts of engine, starting system, charging system will get corroded/deposited. Most probably you will need to change battery, motor oil, fuel, spark plugs, check the starter and alternator. Also check the fuel pump, fuel filter. First shot would be battery, fuel, spark plugs and starter.
Good Luck
