check to see if the radio is clear. If it is it may be the signal going into the amplifier. if it is muffled as well, depending if you have an Equalizer hooked to the unit. This also could cause the problem. Finally check the bass, treble balance and volume knob but turn them back and forth while unit is on and see if signal clears up momentarily. if this is the case the control knobs need to be cleaned. Also spin the connection jacks {RCAs} in the rear and see if this clears it up. If not you may have to have the unit serviced by a professional.

It could be a dirty control or switch, working them back and forth could prove that. Other than that, It's likely bad outputs. A unit that old may have transistors for outputs but might be IC's. Transistors can be tested with an ohm meter to see if they're good or not. Also if it has transistor outputs, they may have a small value resistor on the Emitters, check those as well.
Hope that helps...

for audio system always you have left and right channels.
get the output (left&right) from tuner---go to equalizer input left&right.---from equalizer output go to amplifier inputs.and certainly from amplifier output to speaker.

Speakers must be selected on the front panel of the rcver, and tape ll monitor must be "off", or at least have an outboard processor attached to the tape ll loop. "A" or "B" doesn't matter, but one must be selected to hear program material. If all connections are correct and it still won't work, consider that the output stage has failed....accordianman
