the flame is probably too high and causing a lot of carbon to build up behind the flame shield you are gonna have to remove the burner chamber and clean and the adjust the flame by the screw on the back plate. Screw it in to increase flame and screw out to reduce.
you need to replacve the air filtration filter. the unit must draw in dilution air to burn the fuel. It's located on the back of the heater near the fan. usually to the right side.

starts popping and I get an occasional fireball out the pipe. I checked the coil and the rectifier both of which are working fine and I put in new plugs in before the test and then swithced them to make sure it wasn't a bad plug. Any ideas? Maybe a valve issue? I think I'd do a compression test now. That might help steer you toward a solution.,
