I am trying to install a new thermostat for our 25 year old gas Mendota fireplace. I've been trying a Honeywell CT87K and just read that one won't work. Can you suggest one that will?

your fireplace heater, please contact Crane. Customer ... This instruction manualapplies to the following models of the Fireplace Heaters product line: Color.
The two wire Honeywell T87 and CT87 is nothing but a switch in a control circuit. Wire color is not important at all. What is important is the TERMINAL DESIGNATION those wires are hooked to. Soooo....take the wire off of the sub base of the old stat terminal marked 'R' and attach it to the new sub base terminal marked 'R' and so on. Wire COLOR means nothing at all in your case.
what terminals did you attach the two wires to? You need a 24Volt signal so either RED and W white for heat or may need it on common depends how its wired need more info
That Thermostat will not work on a gas fireplace. The voltage is all wrong. You need a thermostat that will work on millivolts generated by the thermopile on the pilot assembly of the fireplace burner. It will only turn on, because you opened the circuit. It will not turn it off automatically or at all, for that matter.
Better yet, why don't you purchase a Wireless Remote Control that has a thermostat built-in. It's a multifunction remote that will work up to 25 feet from the fireplace and comes with a wall hanger. The SkyTech # 3301TH, should work well for you. http://www.skytechsystem.com/
I just installed a Honeywell 5.2 Day RTH2310B Programmable thermostat and I had to deal with the same situation: 2 wires, one white one black. After reading the edvice in one of the blog, the solution that worked for me was: BLACK ON Rc terminal and WHITE on W terminal. My furnace is running fine now. Hope it helps.
You need a specific thermostat for a Wall Furnace it is a Millivolt Thermostat and not a 24v standard thermostat....usually it will work anyway however if the powerpile (generator produces millivolts from the pilot light) is weak it may not be producing enough...or the Pilot light may be dirty and lazy...won't produce enough millivolts ...or you can have bad or dirty contacts or connections....or a combination of any of the above.....a 24v Thermostat and particularly a non-mercury thermostat has too much resistance in it for a millivolt system....as your Wall Furnace (other than the fan) runs on less than 1 volt
Yes, hopefully changing the thermocouple (skinny sensor) or thermopile(fat sensor) would do the trick. Start with these fairly inexpensive repairs first. Unfortunately if the honeywell valve is bad a new one can be expensive. Also it is hard to order parts from Majestic, they just went bankrupt, not to long ago and Martin is taking them over. You might look for your valves model# and check online for other suppliers of that model# or ask for a compatible Direct Vent gas valve that's not as problematic. (eBay and HVAC dealers, etc.) FYI: You said it's been about 5 years, you might decide it's less of a hassle to have new gas fireplace installed. Martin and Empire are probably two of the best, with 5 year parts and labor warrantys. Hope you find some success in your endeavor.
