The Humax PVR-9300T tuner acts like a single tuner PVR with some channels. You can't watch one channel while recording another for those channels. It sounds like hardware malfunction for sure, did you try calling back the help line to see if they had any other suggestions? Ask for a supervisor if you have to, but it sounds like the hardware is actually failing, nothing to do with the hard drive. The low level person you spoke to probably only knew that one thing to try for troubleshooting regardless of the real problem.
I would ask for a higher level person, I am going to continue to research this for you but it is definitely a very bad sign. It sounds like the unit is failing for sure.
