My washer is in our utility room so the vertical plastic waste pipe I installed with an S bend water trap at the bottom before disappearing through the wall, doesn't look out of place. The washer drain hose simply hooks in the top and has been trouble-free for more than 30 years.
People who must have the machine in the kitchen usually instal it next to the sink and use various fittings to plumb the drain into the sink waste but while this is satisfactory for most people most of the time and it is the cheapest option, it is by no means free of bother for the unfortunate few as the method makes the connection close to the washer tub water level and doesn't always provide a reliable air gap.
