Check the wiring to each element for burn ends that indicate a short, And more than likely it would be best to replace the thermostat to be on the safe side. It tripping off for a reason, you may reset it several times and eventually have to replace it.
I would try it again and if water temp is still to high then I would adjust thermostat down to say 120 degrees and see what that does.If problem continues I would replace thermostat. Thank you
replace both upper and lower thermostats. not just the upper that is giving the trouble. after you replace them, make sure to set them both to the same water temp markings, they will opperate more efficiently.
there is panel on the side that you open by taking one screw off and looking inside , now you can turn the heat up and down with the switch inside the access panel.
