A modern tv is as much computer as tv and isn't electronically robust having much delicate circuitry that is vulnerable to surges, spikes or transients.

A direct lightning strike isn't necessary to cause damage and lightning activity in the area is all that is necessary. A surge protector could provide some protection but in reality disconnecting the tv from the mains and the antenna is the best protection.
In the early days of radio when circuits were more robust, an external antenna and a good ground was often necessary for good signal reception, there would be a knife switch provided to disconnect the antenna and ground it whenever there was thunder around - a worthwhile precaution that unfortunately isn't practical today.

A tv that has failed during an electrical storm might be economically repairable or might not - only the repair guy could tell you this. My limited experience with this tells me although such a tv can be fixed it never seems to achieve the same quality.

SOURCE: blackout problems

It could be the LVDS cable that is connected between the logic main board and the main board, sometimes this cable is too short and comes loose from one of the boards, it could also be a sign that the logic main is going out or the panel itself is shorting out

SOURCE: Plasma tv won't power up after lightning strike

are you sure you seen all the fuses on all of the boards, (they are numerous, and hard to spot, not like fuses you are used to looking for.) if so then your power supply is at fault and must be replaced.

SOURCE: 32 plasma Vizio VP322HDTV10A .

Hello; I am John at J D Electronics in Poland, Maine. I have now repaired 9 of this same model in my shop. The set may be dead always or work intermittently. There are 2 versions of this piece of junk, but I have only seen this one. They all have 2 capacitors that fail on the power supply board just above that red chopper transformer. The are labeled C233 and C234. These are 3300 ufd at 10 volts and 105 C temp rating. You can buy these for about $1 each from Digi-Key Electronics plus shipping. There are some cautions worth mentioning. Make sure the set has been unplugged for a day or more before starting the disassembling. It is VERY important to keep the set face down on a soft surface when doing ANY work on the set. This crappy designed set has a glass faceplate that will fall down if you don't have it face down when all the back screws are removed and it is very hard to put it back into position if it falls. The bottom plastic speaker strip has a million screws to remove both from the bottom edge. Then take out all the screws for the metal back and unplug the speakers. The connector wires to the speakers will not just pull off without you pressing on a side release pin for each of the 4 wire- Stupid design again!. If you are not able to solder these parts in , you can send the board to me for $25 labor plus $10 return shipping and $4 for the parts ( or send your own). We accept only cash or USA postal MO. There is NO Warranty on this repair. It is a better than 80% chance this will fix your set. Call me at 207 998 5687 Good Luck! John

I have a Samsung PN64D8000FFXZA Plasma TV. We had a lightning strike and it no longer works. The red light flashes, the screen will flicker for a second, and then it goes out. It repeats this cycle. Is...

My experience with a lightning struck tv suggests even if you get it working it is unlikely to be the tv you remember ever again.
Even a mild lightning strike has a great deal of power and will track across every part of the tv circuitry in an effort to find a pathway to ground.

Unlikely to be the power supply alone though the components are a little more robust than many in a tv, however it is difficult to know without the sort of tests a tv guy can provide as many modern power supplies are intelligent switch-mode types that monitor the current drawn by circuits and will shut down if it exceeds limits and sometimes won't work at all when disconnected. This is a necessary precaution against fire.

The flashing red light might be expressing a fault code - or might not.

It is a premium tv and if your home insurance wouldn't cover the cost of replacement it would be worth the cost of a repair estimate from a professional.

I have 50" plasma Samsung TV. After lightning strike the picture came back on nicely and clearly but there is no sound

Hi Jimmy,
If you are lucky, it could be the speakers which have gone bad. Try head phones or external speakers. You may take the audio output from the tv and connect it to some music system in your house. If you get sound from any of these outputs, your tv should be ok and the speakers need to be checked.
Good luck.

Cause to this fault to a plasma can be many. It is not predictable, as the set is hit by lightning stroke. It will be best to contact any experienced service technician to get it repaired. If you wish to get some details about the repair and faults to plasma displays, check the site linked here. Almost all plasmas, irrespective of brand will have the same structure and fault symptoms. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Pull up previous posts or type in the brand name and model number to of your set, to its search box, and press 'Enter' or view it in Mosaic / Timeslide option.

Both of my tv's died yesterday. My apex wont turn on anymore an the panasonic has no picture. Whats wrong.

As an electrician, when someone loses more then 1 item of electronics in 1 day, its almost
always traceable to a nearby lightning strike, accompanied by a lack of surge protection for
the VCR/TV/Computer/Stereo/uninsured valuable electronic item/XBOX 360. Surge protection can
be provided by the consumer at the power strip (a good one with builtin protection and a
warranty costs $20, whereas a zero-protection 4-outlet or 6-outlet power strip will cost $4-$5).
Your electrician can provide whole-house protection, or per-circuit protection at
the breaker box, where a GFCI breaker (or better, an AFCI breaker) can be installed.
GFCI = ground fault circuit interruptor
AFCI = Arc fault circuit interruptor
Lightning protection is especially important in Florida, which is the "lightning capital of the world."
I've never found a good solution to lightning-fried electronics (random power supply components are destroyed), other than renters insurance or homeowners insurance.
If desperate, you could try replacing the entire power supply as a module, but even this provides
no guarantee of a fix - lightning damage can extend beyond the power supply.
When traveling, I will always unplug everything before I leave (except the security system),
and also turn off the breakers to unneeded house circuits (which kills the wall switches that
control interior lighting - forcing a burglar to use their flashlight instead of interior lighting)
which is the least convenient lightning protection, but highly effective, and cheap (free).

Color messed up on tv since lightning strike

your tv may have ben magnetized by the lightning strike.
tv's have an automatic degaussing circuit that demagnetizes
the pix tube when the set is turned on. this degaussing circuit
may not be working or magnetism may have been too strong for
the internal degaussing to correct.
contact local tv repair shop in your area see if they can manually
degauss your set , it should be a min. service charge around $25.
