Question about Carrier Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My Carrier inducer motor turns on intermittently and starts for anywhere between 10 - 30 seconds and stops, sometimes not to a full stop before it repeats the cycle of starting up again.

Hi David. Thank you for responding. I'll pass on your suggestion. The service manager who has about 40 years exp said he consulted with another veteran and they think since he found a wire to the inducer motor on a contact for power and moved it to a more appropriate source, the 1st new board may have been damaged so they are now recommending replacing the circuit board. They're giving me a break on cost since a previous tech replaced the pressure switch which he thinks was unwarranted. It still sounds puzzling to me that the motor goes nuts more at night. I don't understand how the problem can be that random as well as unpredictable as to how long it will stay on or stop.

I have a goodman gms90904cxa gas furnace in the attic. the inducer motor starts and stops continuously which delays the start of the burners. Any ideas.

put a voltage meter across the leads of the draft motor checking to see of the supply voltage is intermittent also. If it is check the wiring for shorts. If none found then change the board.

Carrier troubleshooting furnace

If the thermostat isn't selected for "FAN" then the relay is stuck. In heat mode the thermostat opens the gas valve and starts the igniter and the induction motor. If the induction fan isn't running, the flame will stop.

Replacing the board, flame sensor, and pressure switch, and cleaning out the induction motor was definitely a good start. Other things to check would be a blocked or restricted flue pipe, I have ran into a few bird nest before!, and you also want to check or replace the hose that runs from the inducer to the pressure switch if you haven't already. To be honest, most of the time I clear out the nipple on the inducer where the hose goes with a small piece of wire and it works. The last thing I would suggest is making sure the new pressure switch is rated for what you need. Alot of the revisions on furnaces actually call for less than the original pressure just for this problem. Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a 15 ton carrier gas pack at work with inducer motor and spark igniter with hall senser ..showed error 6 flashes on igc board which the drawing said was inducer motor or hall senser...

The error code is always right. Sometimes misleading, but in 15+ yrs I've seen, always right. I'm not familiar with a Hall Sensor. If this is a remote sensor, as in a remote location that senses in the hall and not at the tstat then I know what you're calling a hall sensor. Make sure your IDM is working and closing the air proving switch. And that no other safeties are in that circuit. Check continuity to the remote sensor wiring and all connections? I've seen hot surface ignitors look fine and not work, but pulled a new off the truck and the new worked. All else fails, remote sensors are tough to get a good ohm value due to a temp difference affecting the ohms, replace it. I'm not sure why your "drawing" would relate the IDM to a remote sensor so I'd focus on the IDM and follow the voltage trail.

Dirty flame rod, polish it with a scrub pad.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

If you can get to the shaft of the motor, oil it using electric motor oil. If the motor spins freely, you just may need to replace the start capacitor, however if it is binding; you will need to replace the inducer as an assembly.

HEATER MAKING LOUD NOISES

Check the draft inducer motor for any partial blockages or dibri.

I've seen sticks, birds nest particles and pieces of deteriorating fan blades (squirrel cage type fans) cause this.

You might also find that the inducer motors bearing are going.

If its a loud vibrating grinding type noise, I'd suspect bearings or missing pieces of the blades. (unbalanced)
If it's a clanking type noise I'd suspect loose items hitting the fan.

The inducer motor will only operate right before and during burner operation, while the blower motor can operate at any time depending on your setting.

Information gathered: Basically the printer carrier has stalled.
Lexmark documentation states that you should turn off your printer and wait a few seconds and turn the printer back on.
Restarting the spooler will sometimes do the trick as well.
Go to start, run
type: <cmd> without <>
Command prompt will open up.
Type: net stop spooler
The spooler will say it stopped successfully.
Type net start spooler
The spooler will say it started successfully.
Hope this helps!
