When that happens the cause is often a blocked defrost drain.

After each cooling cycle a panel heater is switched on for a short time to melt the ice that has formed over the evaporator and the resulting water droplets are channeled into a drain that dispenses them into an evaporation tray attached to the motor/compressor unit.

A flexible curtain wire is what I use to clear the drain.

Drain is usually at the back of the cabinet. About halfway down there is generally a funnel shape moulded into the plastic cabinet liner designed to channel water droplets into the drain.

OK I cleaned that. There was actually two of them. One was clean and the other was partially plugged but not completely. I cleaned the fins on the coil the best I could. They had a lot of dust on them and I cleaned the fan. The temp is better. It got down to 36 with the setting at 34, but I am still getting the ice in the bottom of the fridge.

If you cleaned and dried the inside of the cabinet and removed all traces of ice and now meltwater is all going down the drain - it creates the question of where the water is coming from that is causing the ice?

It is early to judge as after having the door open for a while it will take around 24 hours for the temperature to stabilise and the natural condensation to reduce to a minimum. If unnatural localised ice buildup persists it indicates the cabinet insulation has broken down in that area.

Is there a vacuum to seal the doors tight?

  • Vernon Taylor Aug 11, 2020

No. These days and for a considerable time fridge and freezer doors are held firmly closed by a flexible magnetic strip embedded in the plastic door seal. It relies on good door alignment and a smooth metal surface to seal against so it is important not to allow spillages or moisture to cause corrosion of the surface at the bottom. I find a spray with silicone around the surface and the seal helps keep the seal efficient.

    Thank you so much.

Kenmore classic bottom freezer refrigeration warm but freezer is cold

I would guess you have just caused a build up of ice to block the air way, which normally takes cold air into the fridge. manually defrost (unplug and wait until the ice goes away) then restart and it should be fine

Check for cracks in the water supply tube from the house plumbing valve to the ice maker. Could also be the valve itself.

Turn off valve for a day to diagnose which.

The defrosting heating element may have burnt out. Also if the gasket around the door/drawer isn't sealing correctly moisture from the air leaking in could be condensing inside and then freezing causing the build up.

My kenmore elite refrig keeps leaking water from what appears to be condensation. It gets so bad that the ice maker door freezes shut and water actually drips on the floor. The freezer is set to 0 while...

The high level of condensation is due to constant opening of the fridge when the frost develops. It is required to defrost off the condensation and if this has an auto mode timer for defrost , then it is possible that it is not working.
The water must drain out to the drain tank but since it is formed out of the freezer the water flows out of the collection tray.

Ice build up on freezer floor.

Hi, If ice is building in the freezer, you have a defrost drain hole plugged. Unplug the Fridge and then remove the rear panel off the freezer. There you will find ice built up in rain. Remove the ice (hair dryer works best). Once the ice is gone, you need to make sure the drain hole is open all the way. A baisting serringe with hot water works really well.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further. Please rate my answer so I know how I am doing.

Thanks
Vic
