    ask apple this?
maybe the PC , the firewire port is dead or its driver is missing,
some PC this port is dummy port did you look to see pins there and wires going from there to other places inside PC, like wirewire ports real.
on some PCs it may be disabled in BIOS.
RTM< read the manual on PC first see what it says to make firewire work, that be first.
RTM. no 2 PC's on earth are the same unless are, so we RTM first.

A blue and red flashing light and won't connect to computer

External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.

These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.

Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.

Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.

Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.

After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.

Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.

After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.

Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

Log on to your PC computer using an account with administrative privileges.

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and then double-click on the "Computer Management" icon.

Select "Disk Management" from the list of options on left side of the window.

Right-click on the drive you want your computer to recognize and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

Select a drive letter for the external hard drive to be recognized as and click "OK."

The drive will now appear in My Computer.

Hope this helps.

I have a sony handy cam DCR - DVD105, I want to know all the ways of being able to connect it to a laptop and extract the files to use in other softwares, like Window's Movie Maker, or Power Direct 09.

How to load Mini DVD to Mac
  • Though Mini DVD can not be played back in Mac slot loading player, we have other ways to load Mini DVD to Mac.
  • Method 1 If Mini DVD camcorder has FireWire or USB; just connect the Mini DVD camcorder to Mac using FireWire, or USB to load Mini DVD to Mac.
  • Method 2 If Mini DVD camcorder has not FireWire or USB; just shop for external mini-DVD drive that uses either a USB or Firewire connector cable, and then connect the external mini-DVD drive to your Mac and install any extra software that came with it. Insert the mini-DVD into the external drive, and then access the files on the mini-DVD as you normally would to load Mini DVD to Mac.
  • Method 3 If Mini DVD camcorder has not FireWire or USB; buy an adapter that converts a mini-DVD to a normal DVD by adding on a circular plastic piece that emulates the full size of a regular DVD. Attach the adapter to the mini-DVD and load it into the Mac's DVD drive to access the files. (Check the specifications of the adapter before purchasing, as several on the market do not work in vertical-loading drives like those found on the MacBook Pro.)
  • Method 4 If Mini DVD camcorder has not FireWire or USB and you don't want to buy a separate external drive or full-size adapter either, but you do have access to a PC, you can transfer the files on the mini-DVD onto the PC, then put them onto a USB flash drive, which will work on your Mac.

We understand that your problem is: We understand that your problem is: Hello, I have Lacie porsche external hard drive. I also have a seagate firewire external drive which us working fine. Unfortunately...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Transcend 500 GB External HDD is detected but doesnt show the data in it.

Your external HDD may be corrupted. Recover the data before you use it.

First things first: STOP using the external hard dive that you want to recover data from in case you may quite possibly ruin your chances of data recovery.

Then Recommend you have a try of Wondershare Data Recovery, a data recovery program with both Windows and Mac versions provided. It should help you. Get the related versions here,

Data Recovery Windows (for Windows)
Data Recovery Mac (for Apple Mac OS)

Remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your hard drive until you can recover your data safely!

Running a lacie hard drive with mac mini - after 2 years will not show up on desktop or in utility disk window

Hello,

There are several possible reasons for this.

The most common is a short or failure in the Lacie enclosure caused by mixing up power/AC adapters. If your two Lacie drives are different models and you accidentally used the wrong adapter you may have damaged the circuitry.

The second possiblilty is that your power adapter or USB/Firewire cables could be damaged. Try switching USB/Firewire Cables First. If this fails to work then check if you have a smae sized adapter with the exact same Output Voltage and Amps on both adapters. Only if they are identical try switching adpaters from the working unit. If they are not proceed to the below solution.

Finally if the unit was dropped, bumped or unplugged while it was running it is quite possible that you may have damaged either the drive or the file structure on it, either of which would cause it to stop showing up.

Solution:

Try the cable swaps if able, if they work, replace the USB cable or replace the entire enclosure if the power adapter is the issue.

If neither works then you have either a failed hard drive or failed enclosure. Go to your local PC store (not a big box and yes PC, they tend to have more experience and parts to work with in this type of situation), have the techs there remove the drive from the Lacie enclosure and place it in a new enclosure for testing. They may not be able to see your files but they will be able to tell if the drive is working. If it is, buy the enclosure, then connect the drive back to your Mac. If it works you're done.

If the drive works but the Mac still doesn't recognize it(doesn't show up on the screen), then comment back and I will get you the link to a program you can use to retrieve the lost files.

If the drive simply fails to show up at the store in the new enclosure you will need the help of a pro to recover any important files. If that is the case reply with your location, Country, State and City and I will recomend an appropriate facility for you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Drive not found on mac when connected via usb

Hello,

Thanks for using FixYa. There are a few reasons this can happen.

1. Your Mac has corrupted systems files.
2. The USB Cable Could be faulty.
3. The AC adapter could be faulty.
4. The enclosure Could be faulty.
5. The drive in the enclosure could be faulty.

The easiest two to test are the USB cable and corruption on your Mac.
Try connecting the drive to a different computer. If it works your system is corrupted, Archive and re-install your Mac and this should repair the problem. If that fails try a different USB cable, if it works, problem solved. If they both fail, move onto the AC adapter. Take the drive and enclosure to a PC shop and have the techs test the AC adapter with a multi-meter, if it checks out then we're down to the enclosure or drive if it doesn't test with a replacement.(Important, use an actual PC shop, not a big box, Most of the $8/hr staff at the big box stores don't know how to use a multi-meter let alone the next step). If the replacement fails or if the AC adapter tests good then the problem is either in the Enclosure or harddrive. The PC shop should be able to test the drive in a new enclosure if the above steps failed, if it works in a new enclosure the fault was in your enclosure, buy the new enclosure and be on your way.

Finally, if all the above steps fail then the fault is in the actual hard drive. If this is the case you will require the help of a pro to retrieve the data. I will be happy to refer you to an appropriate facility if this is the case. If it is the case reply with your location(city, state and country) and I will provide one or more nearby options and help you get checked in to their system.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

My mac cant see my minimax 500GB, it powers on and spins up, but i cant see it on my desktop. I'm using the firewire cable.

The above answer is wrong. All MiniMax drive are formatted for Macs out of the box (that why they are shaped exactly the same as a mac Mini).
Try connecting with a USB lead to see if that works.
These units are generally very good (i've installed about a dozen in the last year) but I have known some be DOA (I've only had one). Do other externals work in your FW port? If they do, plug them into one of the other ports on the MiniMax and see if they still work.
There is always a chance that your FW port is faulty - they have been known to need resetting (you'll have to google that as I can't remember the exact procedure - I think a quick way is to disconnect everything from the mac - yes everything! and leave the mac sitting naked and forlorn for about 20 minutes, then reconnect everything including your minimax and power up the mac. With luck it should come on and mount. Let us know what happens.

Lacie d2 external drive

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.
