I don't know the official air gap but it needs to be as close as possible without touching the flywheel - bear in mind the flywheel will expand as it gets hot. I find 8 thou (0.008") works well with small engines.

Most likely the isue is too large plug gap. The proper gap is 1mm, set the gap first then if you still want to check coil output take the plug out hold the base of the plug to the cylinder head pull the start rope and look for a spark. If you can't see a spark seperate the plug base from the cylinder with your finger pull the cord, if it hurts stop pulling the coil is good! If you dont feel the shock then the coil may be defective however there is a couple of electrical conections to check first. If you already have access to the coil and have an ohm meter check for a low resistance (below 10 ohms) across the coil wires.

Need air gap on a Poulan p4500 weedeater

I just use a business card as gauge between the flywheel and coil to set it. I use this method on engines from weed eaters to bigger two cylinder 26 horsepower tractor engines. Hope this helps. Please vote yes, thank you.

I need the gap setting for the coil on my homelite weedeater 25CC 'Easy Reach'

As small as you can without fouling the flywheel. It should work with anything up to a 20 thou gap, so if you set it to 10 thou and no spark, then you need to replace the coil..

Weedeater hedge trimmer will not stay running.

Firstly, make sure that the fuel mixture is good, as old or incorrectly mixed fuel, is a possibility.
Then as long as the air filter, and spark plug are ok, check that fuel is entering the carb. If so, you can adjust the timing, by expanding or reducing the gap between contact, and the magneto/coil.
You can also adjust the timing, by changing the gap on the plug too.
There ya go,
Don't forget to rate, thanks ;)
