SOURCE: Craftsman generator, several years old,

pour a little raw fuel into carb intake. try to start. if engine runs for a few seconds and quits the problem is more than likely a clogged carb. go to auto store and get a gallon can of carb clreaner and dissassemble carb and lower into bucket and let soak over nite. you'll want to get a carb kit to replace any gaskets that may get messed up during tear down. when you go back together make sure to wash any residue of cleaner out of carb and use a small nozzel air blower on air hose to blow out ALL passages any needle valves have to screw into. take a can of carb cleaner and with the small straw place over hole and squirt into hole. make sure cleaner come out some where in carb body. that way you know all the passages are open. reassemble and crank her up.also invest in a compression guage. remove pllug and screw gauge into plug hole. pull sharply at least 5 times and see what the reading on the guage is. should be at least 70 or better. if rings and valves in good condition don't be surprised at a reading of 120 or better.

SOURCE: starter rope will not pull. Will pull smoothly

If I understand what you are saying... The starter pulls smoothly with the starter cover removed or when installed and the plug removed (no compression or spark). If this is correct I think your saw's timing has slipped or maybe a defective decomp valve. Time to visit your neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic.HTH

No fire from coil how to check

take your spark plug out and reconnect it to your spark boot lay your plug up against the head of the mower now pull your pull rope if your spark plug fires off a little blue spark you have spark . if you have a spark tester you can attach one end to the plug the other to the boot and pull your rope if you see a glowing light it has spark .. note check your control cable if your control cable is not working it will not disengage your brake and not let the engine fire over .

I have a inteck briggs motor on a snapper 30inch mower it has a battery start and a pull rope start it has startd with 2 pulls as the battery is over a year old thts why i have been using the pull start....

test the battery
if it is under 12v as normal change it; 10v is one dead cell. 8v is two dead cells etc.
if it is not able to hold a charge the engine wont start even with the pull start due to electronics not firing at under 12v
that is probably why it starts with the charger hitting it with 14-18v

My lawn mower fires up but idles slow and rough

No adjustments. Automatic governor. Replace spark plug. Ensure blade is sharp and oil is full. 30w oil. Always put Stabile in gas. When you remove spark plug pull rope several times to blowout cylinder. Spray a little WD40 in spark plug hole, then pull rope several times. Spray starting fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug, ensure plug wire snaps on tight. Clean replace air filter.

Lawn mower won't start

to check for firing remove the spark plug insert it in the plug boot and pull the rope while watching to see if the plug sparks be carefull not to touch the plug electrode while pulling the rope or it will shock you. If you don't have a spark, try a different plug. If still no spark the coil could be bad.

Petrol Engine will not start. The saw is a Stilh and I have not usaed it for 18 months

Ok first off drain all fuel out of the saw replace the fuel tank filter, then clean out the air cleaner, pull the spark plug out and with some and paper sand the spark plug so that it's clean. NEXT mix some new gas mix and add to the tank try putting the choke on full and pull rope about a dozen times then put choke in partial open and try starting. If it does not start pull spark plug and pull starter rope and see if you have spark if you do add a capfull of gas mix into the spark plug hole and tighten the spark plug down and try pull starting if it fires off and dies then you have a cracked fuel line and need to replace the fuel line. When you have the plug out spray a small amount of WD 40 into the sparkplug hole and pull the rope a few times to get rings lubracated then add the gas. If it won't start post here and I will give you more directions to test for starting again. HOPE THIS HELPS AND THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA.

Will not start and doesn't even fire. New saw used once. New mixed gas added and sill no fire. Acts like the on/off switch is not operating properly??

Take the saw outside and have a fire extinguisher handy.

SCENARIO #1)
With the switch in the OFF position, remove the spark plug and SLOWLY pull the rope.
CAREFUL HERE!
If you notice raw, liquid fuel coming from the spark plug hole you have a fire hazard in you bare hands!

Gradually increase pulling speed to see if you notice any fuel vapors or mist coming from the spark plug hole. If you do, you have found the problem: It's flooded.
Continue pulling rope and use an air blow gun to LIGHTLY blow into the spark plug hole and dry the cylinder. You should pull 20 or 30 times while blowing air in.

SCENARIO #2)
If the cylinder is bone dry reattach the spark plug wire to the plug and touch the outer shell of the plug (or the threads of it) to a metal surface on the saw's engine (AWAY from the spark plug hole!) You can use any metal object to conduct the electricity and increase your reach if needed. Turn the switch back on and pull the rope medium speed and check for spark on the electrode of the plug. If no spark, turn switch to other position and repeat.

NOTE: IT WILL NOT SHOCK YOU as long as you maintain contact with the outer shell of the spark plug and the engine's metal parts.
If spark is present, reinstall plug and try again.

Be sure the choke lever is set properly for either cold or warm starts (whichever applies) and it should start easily for you in the future.
Hope this helps!
