SOURCE: Electric Water Heater Problem

When an electric water heater fails to heat water, either the power to the water heater has been interrupted or there is a problem with the controls or the heating elements. 1) Be sure electricity is being delivered to the appliance. Check the main switch on the water heater and the circuit breaker (or fuse) that serves the water heater. 2) Check the high-temperature cutoff in the water heater. Open the panel, and push the reset button. 3) If these steps don’t solve the problem, call an appliance repairperson.

Doesn't always come on with hot water is turned on

Water heaters draw water into the bottom, and as the hot water heats, it rises and hot water exits from the top.
You might want to check each fixture, does the hot pipe (tubing)feel warm when you run it for a moment. Can you get warm water from some of the fixtures, but not others?
I'm bet there is a leak at the top of the intake which is filling from the top down, instead of bottom up.

Water won't stay hot long

1) Thermostat may be bad, or out of calibration. Set temperature higher, and/or troubleshoot by type of gas control.
Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve:

2) Dip tube broken

3) Water leak running hot water out of tank.
Turn off all taps and put ear against pipe listening for water leak.

You have 2 problems with several possible causes:
You have 10-year-old electric water heater that was reinstalled after falling down, and doesn't heat the water.
And you have no hot or cold water pressure, and no pipes are leaking.

1) First problem is lack of water pressure throughout house.
Turn on outdoor spigot nearest to water meter.
This spigot will tell you if problem is inside the house or between the house and meter.
If spigot runs full force, then you probably have clogged pipe where water heater connects to main cold line, or the main shut off valve got clogged with sediment that broke off inside the pipe when you were working on water heater.
Open and close shut off valve to see if that helps. Then disassemble pipes and track back the problem. Put pressure gauge on water heater drain valve to watch pressure drop when turning on indoor faucet.
Read following information:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Low-hot-water-pressure.html

Water heater doesn't work:
Test across wires at top of heater to see if you are getting correct voltage:
If tank is receiving correct voltage, then no hot water puts suspicion on upper element or upper thermostat, or both.

No hot water, checked ohms on both heat elements, top is 13.8 bottom is 13.4. i have 122volts to both elements and i played around with the heat adjustment on both top and bottom. over time could rusty well...

Marathon elements are specific to that water heater and can be ordered online, but generally are not at the local hardware.
Good to keep a couple spares around.
Marathon is 240Volt water heater.
Thermostats turn off one leg of the 240Volt circuit, so elements and themostats will always test for 120volts.
You removed wires off elements and tested each for continuity and tests showed elements to be good.
Test top two screws of upper thermostat and make sure you are getting 240V to the water heater.

If water heater has some hot water, then that says water heater is getting 240V, upper element is good, and remaining suspects are bad thermostats, bad lower element, or sediment build-up, or combination.

Water well.
If you have sediment build-up that reaches lower element, then water does not circulate around the element and water heater no longer heats very fast or accurately. If sediment is the problem, sooner or later the lower element will burn out.
Doesn't hurt to flush out the tank now and then, and vacuum out the sediment if that is problem.

Condenser fan wont come on nor will compressor I do have fan op

Thanks for your Question,
First thing to check is the breaker in the panel to see if its tripped, I would suggest turning to off, then back to on, if it trips right after you have a short, if not you will need to check your fuses at the disconnect, first, shut the breaker off to the condensor, then pull the fuses and Ohm check them, if you have no reading then one or both is bad, I would recommend replacing them both if thats the case, if they check good, then you have bigger issues with your heat pump, if these suggestions do not work let me know and I can go into more indepth proceedures with you on what to do, thanks again,
mr.grzz
