The sound was as though one of the pulleys was worn. I replaced the tensioner, the pulley, the water pump (which is on the drivers side, the engine is traverse) it is the northstar 32v. I cannot detect the exact location of the squeal. when I first start the engine it is loud and get quieter but the squeal is still there loud enough to be disturbing. The sound is like that which the water pump would make if it is going out.

Noise you are hearing may be the front bearing in the alternator. When you first start the car the alternator is working harder to replace power you used to run the starter. You can verify the noise source by putting a long bar against the alternator and holding the other end on your ear. be careful not to get the bar into the belt or it can do damage.

Belt replacement 2003 ml500

It is fairly straightforward on the M113 V8s. I can't remember if that automatic tensioner has the 15mm socket spot on it just under the tensioner pulley or not. The tensioner is located on the driver-side lower but next to the power steering pump pulley. Move it from YOUR right to left, when facing the engine and remove the belt. Put the new belt on starting at the crank pulley. The rib side routes all the way around the idler pulley-from the crank shaft, Power steering pulley, top guide/idler pulley and then alternator on the lower right(passenger-side). The back or smooth side goes around the tensioner and water pump.fan pulley. I hope that helps.

BELT REPLACEMENT 2010 3.0 FORD ESCAPE

The above diagrams and advice are off base. The Excape 3.0 Duratech V6 has the water pump on the back (driver side) of the engine, in the center of the "V" and driven by a belt from the pulley on the back side of the overhead camshaft. Unlike earlier duratech V6s, which had a tensioner, the belt has enough give to remove/install with the pulleys in place. I have used tousleyfordparts.com where entering the VIN pulls up the correct part.
Also, the front, main, serpentine belt is a piece of cake once you remove the protective plactic cover from underneith the engine. The tensioner releases counterclockwise, and the belt circles only the alternator pulley, A/C compressor pulley, and vibration damper on the crankshaft.

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Rotate the auto tensioner clockwise to release tension, then remove the drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install drive belt (A). Route the belt over the components in the following order: Crankshaft pulley - A/C pulley - idler pulley - generator pulley - water pump pulley - P/S pump pulley - tensioner pulley.
  2. Rotate auto tensioner arm in the counter-clockwise moving auto tensioner pulley bolt with wrench.
  3. After putting belt on auto tensioner pulley, release the auto tensioner pulley slowly.

The tension belt keeps coming off of my 1999 Town and Country. First the power steering fluid starts to leak, then it overheats. Now the battery is dead. I have already repaired the tension belt before...

Hi,
I assume you mean you have replaced the serpentine drive belt before? When your belt comes off, it is not operating your water pump and alternator or power steering pump, giving you the overheat and dead battery. Shouldnt make power steering fluid leak though. Does the power steering fluid leak all the time, or just when the belt comes off? If it leaks all the time from the pump area, you could have a bad seal and bearing in the pump causing the pulley to wobble and that makes the belt walk off. First, locate the belt routing diagram on the engine cowl (front of vehicle under the hood) or make a drawing of how the belt is routed for re-assembly use. Loosen belt tension at tensioner and take belt loose from a pulley that is easily accessed. Use your hands to wiggle all your pulleys and feel for excessive play in any of them or the components themselves. (water pump, power steering pump,A/C compressor and alternator.) If component play, you could have loose bolts causing wobble. If pulley play, could be bad bearing in component which would need replaced. Pay special attention to excess movement in the tensioner pulley itself. Also visually check for sideways alignment of pulleys. If pulleys are not aligned correctly, it will make the belt walk off also. That is usually a bracket misaligned or bolt holes in bracket worn out. If all checks good, I would suspect a worn out belt or belt tensioner that is not holding enough / proper tesion on belt allowing it to walk off. It will take you about an hour to check these things, repair costs depend on what you discover as a potential problem,as components can be costly.
Let us know what you find......Thanks, Mike

When you start the engine . i cold hear a grinding noise coming from the engine. most likely from from the belt area.

Hello
Remove accessory belt and examine the water pump pulley. Turn it manually and if there's to much play it is possible that it is worn out. with the belt removed still, check idler pulley(s) and tension pulley. If bearings turn freely or a "dry" sound is hearded, chances are bearing pulley(s) are worn. Carlos C.

When I raise the hood and with motor running looking to my left there is a belt running and a squeaking noise at idle coming from that area. The van is front wheel drive so motor sits in there sideways.

Has it just started with cold weather? Does it squeal at first then as the engine is revved, stop squealing.

If so its probably your alternator belt has worked loose and needs tightening. I'd check this out first, if you've not done it before ask a friend with some know how for guidance. But as a guide, there should be about an inch of give when flexed on the longest run between 2 pulleys, if more then probably needs tightening. If more than a couple of years old, replace with a new one.

If it still squeals after tightening/replacing, you could have a faulty water pump bearing or pulley bearing. Either would require replacement to pre-empt catastrophic failure and resultant engine damage.

My son has a 2000 sunfire replaced the drive belt stayed on for a week it junped off put it back on stayed on for 5 miles ond came off again coolant under car

Check where your coolant leak is coming out of, could be water pump, coolant leaking on pulley and will cause belt to slip off of pulley.
