This is a problem with the vertical output IC's and associated capacitors. The solution is to replace the IC (usually LA7838) and 2 capacitors (100uF @35V and 220uF @35V).

Hey people! I may be getting a free 42'' Hitachi flat screen. The person says the picture shrinks from time to time. Any ideas, or is the problem to vague to really get an idea? Thanks! p.s. Sorry I do not...

I would hope that the vertical output circuit needs some attention (that is if it shrinks from top and bottom). That should not be too expensive. Much more than 10 years old though and you are really taking a chance. Look for a manufactures date. Thanks

Hitachi skips over commercials & flickers

If by saying the "aspect ratio changes" you mean the picture shrinks from top and bottom, I would suspect an intermittent short inside one of your picture tubes. The commercial skip function is not causing a problem here. It is the rapid change from dark to light that I believe is putting an extra strain on a weak or defective picture tube.

You can try to change C621 first and if this doesn't do it, then M-301 is defective.
