I need white sewing machine #1740 manual

Singer has the manuals for the White 1740 on their support site: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals .
The direct links are:
http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/712_white-1740-x.pdf and http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/1105_white-1740-x.pdf . The two links seem to give identical files. Note you will need Adobe Reader or a similar program to read the files.

I hope this helps.

The small bar that holds the zipper foot on broke. How can I get a new zipper foot?

There will be several zipper feet available at any of the sewing machine stores. You can either take the broken foot with you (or another foot for the machine) or note the shank length and the bar length on the foot. I believe the White uses a low shank foot. In that case, you would get a foot that is designed as a low shank foot (assuming the bar isn't narrower than your current foot), and it will work.

The common Foot styles are low, high and slant.

I hope this helps.

(you can also order sewing machine feet online but you need to know the style of how the foot connects to the machine. The easiest way to do that is to compare it to similar feet in a local store. Most of the online vendors will list the machine brands that are compatible with a given foot. However, I know that Husqvarna low shank feet have changed width over the past 30 years and thus not all of the feet from a new machine are mutually compatible with those for an older machine. So I wouldn't guarantee the match without seeing the feet side by side.)

I have a white quilter's sewing machine, model 1740. I cannot get the foot pedal to work. It only sews if I push the start/stop button on front of machine. How do I get the foot pedal to work?

Hi, follow the instruction below to troubleshoot the foot pedal
  • Unplug the machine plug and wall plug on the sewing machine.
  • Check the power cord for cracks, burns, or faulty contacts as this could be a possible reason for the foot control not working.
  • Open the foot control by using a knife or flat surface tool, such as a flathead screwdriver, to pry open the corner of the foot control.
  • Check the wires to see if they are disconnected; this can happen if the foot control drops to the ground. To check wires, remove the circuit board using a flat knife. Inspect the wires inside the foot control. You will see some wires that are soldered together. Check to see if there are any broken wires, as this could be the problem. If the wire is broken, clean the area to remove any debris or dirt. Remove a small amount of the insulation before soldering. Solder wires together.
  • When you are done, reassemble the foot control and make sure it's working again.

White 1600 SpeedyLock. Power, but foot pedal won't engage. Took foot pedal apart, mechanically looks fine-- computer board in there. Do I need a new foot pedal?

When stepping on the foot control, does the motor hum or anything? Or is dead silent? If it sounds like it's trying to do something, the serger probably needs to be serviced. If it's silent, you probably need a new foot control.
