SOURCE: samsung side by side refridgerator making noise and freezing
its a heater cycle problem..the defroster is not working properly. its building up ice in the evaporator that touches the evaporator fan that makes that loud noise but stops when you open a door. it could be either a bad heater, a bad thermo disc or a bad timer.hope i was able to help

I don't usually buy the service plan but I did for this unit (hey it's gen 1). The service guy said he has seen this problem quite a bit and that LG created a new RCM board to fix it (part# BBR34917104). Apparently the OEM board didn't detect the ice build up on the fan motor very well. I had the new board installed two days ago and defrosted the freezer. So far so good, I'll post again if I have any further issues.

the fan behind the ice maker is iced up poss fault defrost heater gone try total defrost faor a list 36 hrs restart it noise come back then you need to repace the defrost heater hope this helps

Check your defrost components. The fan is hitting the frost buildup and will shut off when the door is opened so as to not circulate the warm air. The heater or the timer is not doing a proper defrost cycle.

Hi Laura. Welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
What your hearing is a fan motor usually an evaporator fan motor in the freezer compartment. More often than not when this symptom appears there is ice build up on the evaporator coils due to an automatic defrosting problem. The fan blade can also be damaged so that the fan motor gyrates wildly in the mounting bracket or the fan bearings could be faling.
Having mention all of the above here is a way you can determine of you have defrost problem or not.
1. Unplug the unit at the wall
2. Remove the freezer contents
3. Place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a bit over 2 hours. Mind you this will make a constant water mess so be ready to tend to the drips and minor puddles.
4. After the manual defrosting session with the fan reload the freezer contents.
5. Plug the unit in at the wall outlet
6. Check for normal temps after about 4 hours
and
7. There should be NO FAN NOISE.
If the fan noise ceased due to your manual defrosting of the unit then you can probably expect the ice build up to repeat in 3 to 4 days along with decreasing performance of your refrigerator.
IF the ice comes back... you have an automtic defrost problem that will need serviced.
