Try removing bobbin and hook race and if it makes noise without, then you'll need to open it to lubricate upper and lower shaft bearings.

If noise goes away with hook removed be sure to lubricate per manual. Use a good synthetic machine lubricant such as gun (firearm) oil.

I'll give that a try and see if that gets me anywhere. If not I may have to get the poor thing serviced. Which sadly will have to wait till the sewing shops are open again.

So come to find out it was gelled lubricant on the main drive shaft coming from the motor. Luckily I had some lucas gun oil (the blue stuff, the red is far too sticky) and gave it a good oiling. I also went through while I had the case off and hit every oil port with a touch and now it is whisper quiet. Thanks for leading me in the right direction!

Squeaking noise in needle movement mechanism

Yes, you should use one drop of light machine oil on every joint or anything that slides.

Why does my sewing machine keep squeaking? I've put oil on top and bottom and cleaned it and still it keeps on squeaking!!!

It most likely needs something to be tightened, so I would go all around the machine and make sure everything is tightened as so.

Kenmore sewing machine keeps squeaking how to stop it?

Hello Shirlene, If your Kenmore machine has two drive belts, a belt from the motor to an idler pulley and a belt from the idler pulley to the main shaft. I have found that the idler pulley needs some Teflon grease on the idler pulley shaft. On my machine, the squeak would go away for a while if I oiled this idler pulley shaft. But it was short lived. Only grease on the idler pulley shaft would silence the squeak.

Machine squeaks when sewing

Is it a mechanical machine (NOT computerized)?

Do this ONLY if it is MECHANICAL. Remove the top lid and the freearm cover (if no free arm, then you'll have to tilt the machine so you can access the lower mechanism).

Use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil. While handrotating the handwheel, watch where metal parts move against other metal parts and apply 1-2 drops of oil. Do NOT oil plastic, rubber, or leather parts as oil will eventually destroy them.

Be sure to oil the moving parts in the lower mechanism as well. Hopefully this will take care of the squeak and get your machine operating 100% again.

Bernina 830, How do I raise the feed dog?

Feed dog selectors on older mechanical machines often become stuck with age, lack of use, and lack of oil. Do a thorough clean and oil of your machine (see your manual for where to oil) using a good quality sewing machine oil (not 3-in-1, WD-40, or cooking oil). If it hasn't been oiled in quite some time, a good penetrating oil such as liquid Tri-Flow Synthentic Oil from your hardware store can be used. Do not use more than one or two drops at a time and do not oil the metal cams or the two white plastic gears. To further loosen things up, direct a hand-held hair dryer on a hot setting into the internal mechanism of the machine. You may need to repeat several times and let it set overnight, but if it is old oil that has gummed things up, it will usually loosen up with oil and heat.

Recommendation is to oil every time a bobbin thread is changed, every 8 hours of constant sewing use, or every six months if not in use.

Also note, sometimes the feed dogs do not raise until you begin to sew even though the selector has been changed.

My mom's old singer will start sewing then slows down to a stop.

It may need a REALLY thorough cleaning & oiling, Cindy, including the motor bearings. The motor's windings may be getting weak, too, or the new belt may be slipping.

I have an older Elna Lotus SP and I can't get the bobbin to spin. I'm pretty sure I have the bobbin in correctly (right side up, thread through the 'spring' in the back so it 'clicks' and up through hole...

Try inserting a new needle, and see if that helps. Make sure that you have the flat side facing the rear of the machine. If not, it may need a tune up. I understand where you want to keep it for sentimental reasons, so it may well be worth it. Just make sure that you pick someone who knows machines. I saw a free manual online for your machine, www.sewingonlineco.uk/instructions/elnalotus/. I did notice that, if it hasn't been oiled, it needs some in the hook area of the bobbin case. Hope, that I helped you. Good luck

I just got my mother's machine out and the needle will not go up and down? i never learned how to run this machine before she passed away so i have no one to ask how to run this machine! mom has been gone...

Can you manually turn the nob to get the needle moving? If you can, it may just need to be cleaned and oiled. I would start by cleaning the bobbin case area and then open up the front enclosure - that sits over where the thread is threaded through the machine. Make sure there's nothing obstructing the parts. Sometimes lint gets in there. Then let me know if that works or not

By any chance were you using your walking foot when it was squeaking? I had the same issue and realized it didn't squeak unless I was using the walking foot, it was actually the walking foot that was squeaking :D I can live with that!
