Sounds like the door switch is malfunctioning.
If anything other than the light comes on when you open the door, unplug it immediately. Can you supply the model number and more detailed information about what's happening? For instance, you hear the transformer come on or the carousel starts turning.. Does the touch pad take input when you press buttons?
Note: if it's just the light coming on and making no sound, it could be possible it's in clock mode, waiting to have the time entered. If you press clock again, it would go to normal operating mode and work.
Please let us know.. Hope this helps.

It may be a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel, such as a sticky relay.
I would suspect a sticky relay first, but the door switches should be checked.

Sadly, we hear of this over and over.
This is usually due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.
If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.
It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.
GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.
Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf
Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. I just think the difference is that GE has stopped paying for the repairs.
The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown here: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/wb27x10489_ge_mag_stir_kit.jpg

There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. It's very helpful when troubleshooting.

DISCONNECTING THE KEYPAD
1. Be sure the oven is disconnected from the power line while you are taking it apart.
2. The keypad connection is the green or blue translucent plastic strip that plugs into a connector near the edge of the board.
3. There are two tiny tabs (one on each side) of the connector that you can gently pull up on to unlock the connector.
4. Then the keypad strip will lift out. Clean both sides of the end of the strip with alcohol-based cleaner if you like, but do not use ammonia-based cleaner. Dry the end of the strip. (A pencil eraser is better and safer).
5. Put the keypad strip back in, making sure both sides are down fully.
6. While holding the strip down, push the connector back down to lock it.
7. Try the keys again with the door closed.

I have a GE space maker the model number is JVM1860.
Same grinding sound when truntable is turning. Stops when you turn turntable off.
Can this be fixed by a layman?
SOURCE: GE Profile microwave remove top grill
On models with two screws on top of cabinet, you must first remove these screws and then
1) open door fully
2) gently tap grill at microwave top on the right hand side - taping or moving grill to the left.
The grill tabs will then disengage from the slots at the bottom edge of the grill.
