Same problem I hooked up my canon hg vixia hg20 after installing all drivers from the disks, and the computer still did not recognize the camera. I then searched on the web under 'canon vixia hg20 driver' and sure enough, there are driver updates. download those and see what happens.

You are restarting your computer after install right.
You should be installing the software with out the camera connected9or the usb cable) shutting computer down/ connecting the camera and cable , and then restarting the system.
If you are doing it any other way the computer will not recognize the camera......you are confusing the system

Canon Vixia HG20 broken cable to view screen

Had the same problem with my HG20. Couldn't find a way to remove the housing and Canon won't tell you how to do it. I sent it in to Canon and it cost me $250 to fix it. You already have the cable so it might knock off a couple bucks. It's crazy what you have to pay for a camera to be repaired that's no longer under warranty. But you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. The service is great though. I sent mine in and they paid the shipping to and from their office. I got it back within a week of sending it in.

My computer do not recognize my canon vixia hf20 double click on my computer icon : computer do not recognize the camcorder canon vixia hf20

Be sure that you have installed he driver correctly ..and the cable is well plugged...,another thing to check is the camera's display and see if it asks for a connection confirmation in the moment you plug it in ...if it does..choose PC connect ..and after that will work ..
also check into the device manager and see if the camera is present there ..even if it appears in yellow with an ask sign on it ...this meaning that the driver is not installed or damaged or not the proper one..

select the operation system ..download ..reinstall and go for it ...but first check what I suggested..
