When the clean light flashes, it indicates a problem with the heating element or that the control board isn't getting the change in water temperature information in the expected period of time. Sometimes this is caused by a problem with the thermistor or thermostat. It could also be caused by a problem with the door switch or motor. Try cleaning the area around the latch and draining the washer after putting water in the tub. After that inspect the element for pitting or discoloration. Replace it if it is damaged. Check the resistance across the thermistor to ensure that the part is good. Check the wiring between the motor, thermostat, and heating element to the control panel for continuity and replace if there is a problem. If the rest of the parts are good, replace the control board.

The parts list, diagram and pricing are available here: https://www.searspartsdirect.com/model/5umy9dy54i-000582/kenmore-66517033401-dishwasher-parts . Another parts list is available here: https://www.repairclinic.com/ProductDetail/939926 .

I hope this helps.

It sounds like you just need to reset the controller. This is done by running (or partially running) a diagnostic cycle, which will clear the error. Here's how to do it: Depending on the model, and the keys you have, press the following sequence of keys quickly (with less that 1 second between key presses:
Heated Dry - Normal - Heated Dry - Normal; or
High Temp - Air Dry - High Temp - Air Dry; or
Hi Temp Scrub, Energy Saver Dry, Hi Temp Scrub, Energy Saver Dry; or
High Temp Wash, Heated Dry, High Temp Wash, Heated Dry.
You will know that you have entered the diagnostic cycle when all the lights light up. Let it run for a few minutes, and then press Cancel to stop the diagnostic cycle and clear the error.

Note: On some of the newer Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid dishwashers, you start the diagnostic cycle by rapidly pressing the 3 left-most keys in the following sequence: 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3.

Clean light keeps blinking; dishwaher won't turn on

Hello Brian, welcome to FixYa.
Based on your post I understand your dishwasher is a Kenmore and the clean light is flashing and it won't start, correct ?
If so, this is usually an error code indicating there was a problem in the heating process the last cycle it ran, however if you could provide the complete model number I could speak specifically to whether it applies to your machine and potentially what to do about it.
Thank you for choosing FixYa and I look forward to your reply.

I have a Kenmore elite dishwasher M#665.13419k701, when you run the cycle it shuts off after about 10 seconds and the normal wash light blinks. what can i check??? Thanks. Israel

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

I understand by reading your post which indicates it is a Kenmore dishwasher you appear to have a concern with the cycle interuopting and the "normal" light flashing.

I'd suggest you first try entering a diagnostic/test...to do so is as follows. Press the following buttons in this sequence...

HEATED DRY - NORMAL, HEATED DRY - NORMAL, HEATED DRY - NORMAL

This diagnostic may take approx. 15-20 minutes to complete. Let it proceed through to completion and let me know what happens and we can go from there.

Macmarkus :)

Clean light flashing, won't allow cycle to run.

Hi,

This machine was made by Whirlpool and the flashing clean light is a common error code for them.
Ifthe clean light is the one flashing then your dishawasher could have aheater circuit problem (depending on the age) or this could simply justbe water colder than it is used to getting.
Repeatedly press the Heated Dry and Hi-Temp Wash(scrub) which ever yours has untill all the LED lights come on, press cancel twice andtry the dishwasher again making sure to run the water at the kitchensink till it is hot before starting the dishwasher, if this trips andlocks you have a problem with the heating element, or temp sensor.
Pressthe heated dry button followed by the normal cycle button, and thenrepeat once. You should see all of the lights come on for a second ortwo, and then the dishwasher will work again.
If you haven'talready, take a look under the kick plate in front to see if there is aschematic tucked in there somewhere. Whirlpool has put theirdiagnostics for specific models on these.
I don't have the specific repair manual for you model.
So, if the above combination does not work here are two more that have worked for me.
HiTemp Wash + Air Dry + HiTemp Wash + Air Dry in less than 5 sec
or
Hi Temp Scrub/Scour + Air Dry + Hi Temp Scrub/Scour + Air Dry in less than 5 sec

Let me know, if you need further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Kenmore dishwasher, model 665.170 344 01. "Clean" light keeps flashing and will not stop. Have tried everything in the manual and the light still will not stop flashing.

If the clean light flashes 7 times, pauses then repeats...

If the dishwasher doesn't sense a water temperature increase, it will stop working and lock the functions (clean light flashes 7 times, all buttons are non responsive).

To resolve this you will have to reset the console. Do this by closing the door and press these buttons in sequence...

-high temp wash
-heated dry
-high temp wash
-heated dry

...all the lights will turn on briefly and the machine will start a diagnostic cycle. You can press cancel or let the diagnostic cyle finish (1-2 minutes).
You should now be able to run the dishwasher as normal.

If the issue returns, you could have a problem with the heating circuit (ie. element, thermostat or wiring). It rarely happens but it could also be the door switch not engaging properly when the door is closed (slightly bend the door latch down making sure it doesn't hit the door when you close it).

The clean light sometimes flashes and just needs to be reset. To do so hit the keys in the following order. <Heated Dry> <Normal Wash> <Heated Dry> <Normal Wash> <Cancel>.
The dishwasher will go through a cancel cycle (drain the tub) and will then let you start it up again.
