Sounds to me like the system is low on refrigerant. Possibly through a punctured gas line after defrosting using a hard pointy object ?

The light is on but the refrigerator will not get cold. Compressor is not running. Any idea?

The compressor does the cooling, not the light ... if the compressor is not running ... you must have ir repaired. This is not a do it yourself project. If your machine is older than a rew years, it is probably not economical to repair it. I suggest you replace the refrigerator.

I presume you have turned the thermostat to a setting that requires the compressor to start ... right?

Thanks for your question @ FixYa.com

The fridge and frezzer are not getting cold at all the lights are on and the is an alarm that keeps beeping, we have hoovered the coils at the back still no differance.

Turn the unit off using the interior switch and unplug the unit for 20 minutes. then plug it back in. With the unit turned turn the thermostat (cold switch) to somewhere in the middle, listen to see if the compressor is running.
If it is running, feel the copper tube coming out of the compressor.
If it gets warm, The Compressor is functioing. The freezer section will get cold first and then the cold air will flow into the refrigerator section.
Let me know if this helps.

REFRIGERATOR NOT GETTING COLD

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. If the relay is ok there is a compressor problem or low freon it it don't start

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

Not all refrigerators are insulated the same and not all condensers are in the same place. Your cold control is monitoring the temperature of the refrigerator section and is designed to turn off the compressor to keep things from freezing in that section. If it stays cold long enough outside in your garage the cold control thinks its cold enough and won't turn the compressor on. A makeshift closet to hold a little heat the unit generates will probably help.

The lights are on in the refrigerator and freezer, but neither unit is cold. The thermometer on the refrigerator registers 55 degrees. Why is it not cooling??

First, make sure the compressor is running. It is underneath the refrigerator body. If the compressor is running, and you still don't have cold air, check the compressor fan. This should be close to the compressor. This fan draws air across the coils and removes heat from them. The compressor and fan must both be operating properly to get cold air.

Fridge doesn't turn on or get cold

HI,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

thanks,

Subzero 590: freezer works, refrigerator not cooling

This is a Sub Zero and many technicians do not realize that these units most all run on 2 separate systems. 2 cold controls 2 compressors 2 evaporators. They share a condenser and condenser fan motor. What you are describing is most likely a bad cold control. It is pretty common for these to get some age and go bad. If you are very savvy with repairs yourself then if you access the compressor area and feel that the compressor on the right is cool and the compressor on the left is warm then you know that the ref. compressor has not been running. UNPLUG THE UNIT OR CUT THE BREAKER OFF. Remove the shelving from the fresh food section and the cover to the lights and the panel below the lights and lean the back panel forward to access the cold control. You will see 3 wires to the cold control. The green wire is the ground wire of corse. Unplug the other 2 wires remembering their location on the control unit. Take a jumper wire and jump these 2 wires. If when you power the unit up the right side compressor comes on then you know that your fresh food cold control is bad. Replace fresh food cold control.
