SOURCE: Beeping Sewing Machine

Your problem is most certainly with the buttonhole switch. Firstly: Look if the buttonhole lever, left back of machine, is push up in position. The beeping sound is a warning message. Secondly Remove the light cover, left of the machine, loosen back screw and remove left hand screw completely. Check for a small black electric switch, follow the brown and green elecrtic wire, just back of the light. If you push the BH lever up and down the switch finger should also move up and down. If it stays down, the machine will not work and give a beeping sound. If the switch finger is stuck, push it up with the BH in top position. Hope this will help you

How do I fix a White sewing machine #445 that keeps breaking the upper thread

Check the thread spool to make certain the thread is not getting snagged on the edge of the spool (or the little slit where you pull out the thread from the spool); then check your tension paths and settings (I once found broken, tangled metallic thread in the needle 'uptake' loop that was snagging the thread and making it break).
Canned air is excellent for cleaning out older models as well as the new electronic machines.

How do i adjust thread tension

Depends on your Bernina model. Some of the older mechanical models (830 Record, etc), the thread will wrap around a tension knob which you can turn right to tighten or left to loosen. The newer mechanicals, the thread passes through a slot at the top of the machine which is the tension disk, but somewhere nearby there is a dial to increase or decrease the tension. The computerized models, the tension is adjustable on the screen.

Tension settings

Some general suggestion - not familiar with White. If you know where the tensioner is, take a scrap of relatively stiff cloth in a constrasting color to the thread to make it easier to see. A good stitch tension will look like a line of adjacent dashed on top and dash-dot-dash on the bottom. If you are seeing dash-dot-dash on top and Dash-dash on the bottom, the tension is too tight. If - usual case - the bottom has dash-loopyloop-dash, or worse, snags, the tension is too loose. Remember tension may need to be adjusted for thicker or thinner work.

I bought a White Family Rotary sewing machine made in 1909. While cleaning it up, I unscrewed part of the tension assembly on the face plate not knowing that these can be very difficult to get back...

Hi,

  • Set up your sewing machine on a table with good lighting available. Plug in the electrical cord. Insert a new needle into the shaft on the needle bar and tighten the thumb screw to secure the needle. The needle bar is the area on the shaft where the assembly for the needle thumb screw is located.
  • Step 2 Thread your sewing machine according to the manufacturer's directions. This requires slipping the thread through various retaining and tensioning loops to allow for the proper drag while sewing. There is usually one loop at the top to go through first, then a second above the thread tension knob. Bring the thread into the tension knob area and pick up the loop of the tension wire. Bring the thread back to the next upper thread loop and then down to the needle bar where you thread the needle.
  • Step 3 Wind a bobbin with the thread that you intend to use. You may have to partially unthread your machine to do this. Make sure there is tension on the thread while you are winding it so that the thread winds properly. Insert the bobbin in the bobbin case and place it in the shuttle race then draw up the thread with the needle thread to prepare to sew. The shuttle race is located in the lower body of the machine under where the needle enters the throat plate.
  • Step 4 Cut a scrap of fabric from the fabric you intend to use for this project, at least 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. Double the thickness of your scrap by folding it in half lengthwise. Insert your scrap under the sewing foot and lower the foot into position. Sew a seam approximately 6 inches long then remove the scrap to check the stitches. If the stitches are loose on the bottom, adjust the tension knob to a higher number for more tension. This is done by turning the knob so that the indicator mark moves to a higher number. If the threads are loose on the top you will need to make the opposite maneuver.
  • Step 5 Sew more seams on your scrap, stopping to check your thread tension for your stitches until you have stitches on top and on bottom with no discernible looseness.

  • Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

    Small loops in the underthread

If the hook of the machine has a small burr on the point it can and will snag the upper thread and keep it from locking securely. The hook is what the bobbin case snaps on to. Take some light metal sanding material and polish the point to remove burr.
