Question about Kohler Electrical Supplies

I have a kohler 6.5 ESZ marine generator with under 200 hours . Had a couple shops check rotor and stator for shorts.....even shipped to CA .....all checked good .

OC stands for Over Crank. How long does it take before the genset starts?

SOURCE: Same Problem, diodes fell out of bridge rectifier assembly

pulling to many amps,diodes could not handle amps so they failed.unit should have kicked its breaker before the diodes burned out.most units have their own breaker to protect the system.I would replace the control board first see how unit reacts,probly fine,if not the you go to next step.

Cummins P2200, 2KWatt, it starts fine, but after a couple of minutes, it gives quite high voltage output, meter needle goes beyond 300v, engine speed seems high since throttle is increased, indicator light on generator also becomes bright, after a minute or so, things come to normal, sometimes takes few minutes to come to normal, situation is same, with/without output load. this happens within initial 15 minutes after startup, afterward everything is normal.

actually, it sounds like the diodes are blown. Check our diodes.

As for checking stator, find the two wires, typically labeled L1 and L2 that are going to it. Measure with a multimeter. If there is no visual signs of damage, continuity can indicate a good stator. You should not have continuity between either wire and the stator frame.

The same goes for the rotor as well. The resistance measurements will not be the same for each one though.

Unfortunately, Powermate is out of business, and service information is scarce.

The control board needs to sense a voltage coming of stator windings to complete the run circuit or else it will shut down. Check the stator and rotor windings for resistance and shorts

Given the work you have done, you never mentioned if you have had the stator and rotor tested? if you can get it running check for DC power on the brushes. that will help isolate. If power blinks for a second, that is the control trying to flash the rotor, if the rotor has a short the controls will remove the excitation voltage. Check that before going to any major expense

Kohler 10 runs only while holding start


Oil pressure, or no AC output from the stator, check stator and rotor for resisitances and shorts.

Kohler generator wont stay on


Check the oil pressure switch, and oil level first. Then check rotor brushes and rotor slip rings may need polishing. If the problem is still there check stator and rotor windings

UU is generator under voltage. Check to see if it does it without laod also. if it does you will need a pro to check and ohm the rotor and stator for shorts

Kohler marine generator troubleshooting


I have a kohler marine generator that shuts down when it reaches operating temp of 200/210 degrees. It runs for about 5 minutes. Already replaced impella and have sea water pumping through, coolant level is good. Any suggestions? Thanks
