Good question and one i had a sense of the answer, but didn't really know.
that's what google's for, and here's what i found:
For mechanical watches, no. Quartz movement watches are usually safe. ... The reason moving the time in reverse is harmful on mechanical watches is because the mechanisms are only designed to move forward, so reversing their movement can cause stress on the parts.
on the 7s26, as you likely know, a trick to 'hack' or stop the seconds hand to set time is to slightly twist the crown backwards slightly until the seconds hand stops. this takes some practice and isn't really moving the hands backwards, just stalling them.
many SKX diver owners have used this for years with no ill effects, including myself. but as said, that's not really turning the hands backwards to set time.
also, a trick on vostok autos and manual winds as a kind of 'quickset' date is to move hands past 12 so the new date clicks over, and then reverse hands 15 minutes, then again move past 12 to click the date over again, repeating until you get to the date you want.
i've done that before, and many people do. not sure if it's recommended. even if not, these movements are so robust you wouldn't notice the damage. but on higher grade/cost movements i certainly wouldn't do it, but most of those are quickset anyway.
so the 7s26 trick is not really moving hands backwards, but as for changing the date with vostoks it's still such a hassle that i just don't bother with the date on them...so there can be no damage.
thanks for the question and cheers.

How to stop the chimes on a hermel w1217 wall clock

Knob 2 sets the chimes. Knob 3's fourth setting appears to turn off the chimes at night. That said, this is a bit deceptive. The steps to changing the chimes settings are sequential. The following link may assist regarding the setting and stopping of chimes and the restarting of the clock.

The chimes on my hermle movement 150-070 sound funny. It's a bell and "clunk" sound as the strikers hit the two bells. Is there an adjustment?

You need to bend the arm on the one hammer back that is making the clunk sound. You will have to experiment a little until you get the sound you are happy with.

The chimes on my **** will chime every 15 minutes and count on the hour for a few hours then the chimes stop working. How do I fix this problem?

If you've had the clock for a number of years, or if it was purchased as old stock, the movement may just be bad. If it has a Hermle brand movement that holds two C cell batteries, make sure to use new Duracell batteries. That's the only quartz movement I've seen that specifically requires a particular brand of battery. I have used Varta brand, which is an equivalent that seems to work fine as well. You may need to check with your local clock shop, or search for clock repair in your general area.

How to adjust a Hermle grandfather clock?

you can try this although it may not work with your movement: set the clock at 9 and then move the hands forward past the 12 position. count the strikes. move the hands backward to the 9 position and then advance forward to the 12 position. count the strikes. did the strikes increase by one? if so, keep doing the same thing until your get 12 strikes when you are on the 12. then you can move forward and set the correct time and have the correct # of strikes.

Need setting instructions for clock movement

Howard Miller offers this feature: This is how it works.

Automatic Night-Time Silencing Option
Grandfather Clocks will offer a night time shutoff option. There are 3 options on this lever.
1) "Night On" - This will keep the chime striking 24 hours
2) "Night Off" - This position will turn off the chiming between 10:15PM and 7:00AM
3) "Strike" - This position will allow the movement to strike the hour without the Westminster melody if the other Westminster melody lever is turned to Silent.

Hope this helps.
