ADJUSTING THE IDLE SPEED AND MIXTURE
On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.

  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow (image A). Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed (image B), set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle (image D), hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture (image C).

This would be caused by a sticky needle valve on the float in the carburetor. You have three cures 1. remove and clean the carburetor internally. 2. replace the carburetor with a new one. 3. or most simply buy and install a fuel shut off valve and turn it off when not in use. make sure you change the oil 1 4 ID LINE GAS FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE TECUMSEH BRIGGS

How do I adjust the valves on a Briggs and Stratton Intek V Twin

Remove the valve covers look up your valve clearance specs turn the engine by hand until the piston is at top dead center then go 1/4 turn past that and then put a feeler gage for the valve clearance you need for that valve and snug up the adjustment nut. Check your oil when your done some oil will spill out when opening the valve cover.

Gasoline leaking into air filter on Briggs & Stratton engine

The float/needle-valve/seat need to be looked at in the carburetor base. The float is not shutting off fuel flow when bowl is at design fuel level. Look for dirt/varnish or anything that interferes with float free movement or preventing the needle valve to close with the seat--usually, just cleaning these parts with spray carburetor cleaner and wiping with a clean cloth will restore operation. Try not to bend anything on the float assembly. Hope this helps!

Gas leaking out of breather on carb

Either your float has a hole in it or your needle and seat is clogged. You will have to disassemble the carb to check this out. If your engine has an fuel valve solenoid it may be defective. Remove from carb and apply power, turn key to on, and see if it opens up. If it does, turn key off and the valve should close.

Hi i would like a diagram to show valve timing with crank shaft for a briggs and stratton 3 hp petrol engine

"3 HP" means nothing. For definitive, need the Model, Type and Code numbers off the engine. But probably 90% of Briggs engines or better are timed with the valves closed at 1/4 turn past TDC.
