Thanks for the fast reply-cleaning the glass is probably the one thing i never thought to do. Sometimes the most simple thing works. Will try tonight.

definately not dirty glass on the scanner. It's clean. I assume there is drum for the scanner, and it's bad. Funny thing is, on the hp home page, they show an example of exactly what i am experiencing, and the fix they show just doesnt fix it.

Must be time to take it in for repair.

Having a problem with black lines when I scan a document. Definitely NOT dirty glass. Varies in intensity from document to document.... Any ideas??

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2008

On the AL-1655cs, a line appearing down the page when scanned, but not when printed, is not a result of dirty glass. The paper being scanned does not pass over the glass.

Not sure what you have tried but if there are no lines when printing but there when scanning there is something on the scanner. Could be something as small a single dot of dirt and it will put a line down the whole page. Try cleaning the glass.

Hi I have a similar problem but worse yet, my HP C4280 cannot print anything black. The black ink was working perfectly when we did the test print but it somehow would not print anything black when we print or copy documents. Any ideas?

How do i get rid of a black line that ahows up down the r side of scanned documents, there is no line on the originals

If you are using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to scan, you may need to clean the scanner bar glass.
First test: See if the line appears when you scan on the flatbed. If so, it is probably a hardware failure.
If it appears only when using the ADF, you need to clean the ADF.
HP has a general diagnostic and cleaning procedure here:

check if printer can make a copy as standalone
if not
power cycle the printer
if still unresolved
restore the printer to factory defaults by checking to set up>tools>restore factory defaults

If from the PC
restart pc
click on the black printer icon on your desktop
click on activate scan to pc
then try scanning again

How do I get rid of a vertical black line on my feeder-fed copies and scans?

when using a document feeder to feed originals thru your machine the originals are "scanned" by a thin glass. this glass can get dirty with whiteout or other things. Open up the document feeder and clean the glass with a cloth with a small bit of rubbing alcohol on it. Use a flashlight to look at this glass because tiny spots can cause lines on your copies. Good luck.

Printer/Scanner Problems

Does the line show up on PRINTS FROM YOUR COMPUTER also, or only when SCANNING A DOCUMENT? If the line is only from scanned documents, the SCAN GLASS has something stuck on it. The SCAN GLASS is a GLASS **** located under the ORIGINAL FEEDER. It is NOT the plate of glass you place the original on . Look UNDER the original feeder for a scrap of paper stuck in the optical path of the GLASS ****, and remove the scrap, or CLEAN THE SCAN GLASS IF CORRECTION FLUID, INK, ETC ARE STUCK ON IT. If the line shows up on ALL prints, your CHARGE CLEANING SLIDER located in the IMAGING (DRUM) UNIT must be slid all the way to one end of the charger, OR IT WILL CAUSE A BLACK LINE ON ALL PRINTS. Otherwise, the IMAGING UNIT may need to be cleaned or replaced. Toner smudges on the drum would indicate need for cleaning or replacement.
