This means your rollers are either dirty or damaged. The same thing happened to my Lexmark printer and they told me to clean the rollers. Nothing happened it still was messed up so they just sent me a new one...
I find that if you have checked paper and there is some still in it then you just need to open and shut all sections of fax machine and it will then start up again and the red symbol will go off

A tiny piece of torn paper covering the sensor. Always pull the machine out and open all the doors. Shine a flashlight into all the corners. Also remove the toner cartridge and all the paper trays.

I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavypaper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the printbutton applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so itwill feed through the printer. The reason for this is in some cases Ihave been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited thereover time. Worth a try, as I have fixed a number of printers thisway, saving costly repairs. Hope this helps.Bud
