Question about Poulan Garden

1 Answer

Poulan Wild Thing acts like it is trying to fire on the wrong stroke. The saw jerks the starter rope out of your hand. Is it a timing issue?

Is there a problem with the start rope? Actually I have two saws with the same problem.

How to start poulan 18 inch wildthing chainsaw

Hello Wade,
There should be starting instructions on back on saw, if not its usually the same for most saws. Fill tank with proper mixed fuel. Add bar and chain oil if necessary. Pull knob out to "start" position. Pull choke all the way out. Prime unit 6 times. Place saw firmly on floor, slide right foot under handle and have left hand firmly on top handle. Pull throttle and lock it in high. Pull rope 4 to 5 times until unit pops. Then, set chock lever on half.(this is usually pushing in half way). Pull rope again 4 to 5 times until unit starts, then after 30 seconds or so push choke knob in to turn choke off. If this procedure doesn't work, give it 10 minutes or so, because unit may be flooded, then try again. Good luck!

I have a wild thing. the rope pull starter is very hard to pull. when i take the spark plug out it is easy to pull. the saw was not used for about 4 years until yesterday. it ran for about 45 minutes fine....

one piston ring has expanded now having no or a very fine gap increasing the compression ratio causing this to happen. When the spark plug is removed it is very easy to pull on the cord in any means. A inspection is due of this engine or a new chain saw is needed

How do you replace spring on a poulan chainsaw

A Poulan "P4018WT Gas Saw Type 1" IPL follows (may not be your saw):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/P4018WT-Gas-Saw-Type-1/75.P4018WT-Gas-Saw-Type-1.1.59.1.html
If yours is not a "Type 1" it can be found here:
Poulan.com
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/POULAN-WEED-EATER/75.59.html
The dash number of your serial number is the type.

If the spring is unwound:
Recoil Spring Rewind
I invert and secure the starter housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection and both hands). I am right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely rewound. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. The video explains how to tension the spring.

The sprocket that runs the chain. Some teeth broke off. Need part and is it easy to replace

http://www.jackssmallengines.com/sprockets_poulan.cfm

Pull the sparkplug and turn engine till the piston is at the bottom of it's stroke then push some rope into the sparkplug hole so that when the crankshaft turns the piston will bottom out against the rope and stop turning. The sprocket is left handed threads. Just turn it off of the crankshaft and replace.

This is my second wild thing. I wore the first

Hello Ms Weem:
Will the starter cover from your first Wild Thing fit?
Have you looked at the starter cover on a different new Wild Thing (demo)? Is it like yours?
Are you releasing the starter rope with it extended?
Yours is the first problem of this type I've heard for your saw. There is no pulley guide or starter rope thimble I'm aware of. I'd think a small nylon or teflon bushing for the starter rope could be fabricated by a machine shop but it would be at your expense. HTH

Starter rope will not retract.

inside the rope pull housing is a flat spring,it may have come loose from its anchor, its an easy fix...unscrew the 3 screws on housing, lift off housing, and the rope pull is inside the casing, you will then see if its broken, or just come off anchor, 10 minute job if its just loose......

Recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn't retract pull rope

Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.
